The question is, why would you split a package on June 10th in Illinois if you want them to build and survive the winter? Are you tying to make nucs?

Why don't you give your queenless bees a frame of brood (older, open) to possibly help them stay put. If you had any drawn comb I would fill some with syrup as well.

I would think the bees would be satisfied with that for a while.

Are you sure the queen cage did not fall to the bottom of the box?

My bad. The cage fell off when I took off the tin plate on the box. :doh: Found the cage on the bottom of hive buried with bees. Odd that the frames fit OK despite the addition on the floor. All fixed. Looks like they where feeding her through the screen. Sugar plug exposed and cage hung. My 2nd queen should come in next week. I'll pull a few full frames from the stronger hive for a nuc.
