My bees are in a herd on the vertical surface of my hive. I don't think they're doing anything nefarious like waiting to mug an innocent dirt-dobber passing by. It just looks kind of funny. Any idea as to why they're doing it? My Mom's bee's are crowed up on the horizontal surface of the entrance. I figured they were trying to fan some cool air inside. Any ideas as to what's going on?

Welcome to Beesource!

> bee crowds, flocks, herds... "Bearing"?

This behavior is generally described as "bearding". There may be more than one cause, but often it is associated with hot weather. By moving outside the bees can be cooler, and their body heat does not make the hive even hotter.

From an earlier post, link is below the photo:

Hey thanks! My Mom sent me a text to tell me that they were doing something wierd so I came here. Looks like I joined the right bunch. Appreciate the timely answer!
