We purchased and installed two packages of bees 3 days ago; one into a Golden Mean hive and one into a modified African Top-Bar Hive. The bees in the Golden Mean seem to be doing well. We're seeing the bees hanging from the entrance of the second hive in the evenings. Not sure if they have too much area to try and cool in that hive or exactly what the difference is. My main question is if we should be doing something to deter them from bearding. Thanks!

Thanks! Any thoughts on why they are only doing it at night? I was just out there and they seem to be behaving normally now.

During the day the foragers are out working, so you don't see them. At night they are all home, and its too hot inside, so some of them go out on the porch. :)

Each bee inside the hive adds a small amount of body heat, so those that go outside are removing their heat from the hive.

My TBH hives have a full width top entrance like these:

which seems to work fairly well.
