Did my first alcohol wash for VARROA since 5/23 when I did one with the sate inspector .
The hive

the brood nest

the open brood bee's

I rinsed them 2 times

The results no mites:applause: This hive is all 4.9 cell brood frames and was treated last fall with OAV so with any luck I won't have treat this coming fall I'm going to test all my hives next week and see where I standing .
I just wanted to brag :D

Hate to see that many of the bees dead though. Pretty sure you can do the exact same thing with powdered sugar and the bees don't die.

But the powdered sugar is not as accurate. I hate to kill bees too. But sacrificing 300 or so to find out with certainty what is going on in the colony seems worthwhile. Some certification groups (CNG) require testing of each colony before applying medications; no making a decision to treat a yard - each colony needs to be considered individually.

Nice looking colony!

Hey Glock, If you do find mites in any of your boxes how are you going to treat them, will you wait till fall or do the three week treatment with the OAV
It will depend how bad the mites are but I think my mite loads are low . I treated at the end of last year with OAV and it seem to get the mite under control and this year I have tested 2 hive so far and no mites. I have had no signs of VARROA and I am all ways looking I have rip open drone brood and no mites to be found . I see no PMS with any luck I won't have to treat . Time will tell and I am watching.:)
I'm going to test all my hives this coming SUN.
