I keep bees in N Alabama, near the TN border. The fall flow should begin around mid-August and last into mid-October.

I have two healthy hives from which I have already harvested honey. They are both three boxes high, 9 medium frames each. Both have laying queens and a top box just about full of honey.

Do I need to add supers to accommodate the fall flow? What are the risks if I do? If I don't?

I'd say if the hives are strong, and frames covered... pull most of capped honey, leaving a few frames on outside of boxes. Extract them and let bees clean out 75 to 100 yards away from hives. When clean, add to top of the hives stack. Let em store all they can. After fall flow, pull all capped frames, extract, and start feeding for winter. I'd add a little pollen sub to keep an building workforce. Here in our area, the bees will lay till late November and then slow for winter. Should get a nice harvest this fall.
