Hello all, I wanted to try a hand at beekeeping as a hobby, I have been lurking in the back ground reading all that I can. Anyway I'll probably be talking to a few of you here shortly.

well, good luck with that. It's like saying "hey, I'm going to start recreational heroine use." I'm sure some folks have managed to keep the hive counts down and just be happy to have bees, but I know of far more cases where the idea of a single hive of bees started two hives in the spring, ended the year with 3-5 hives, and had more packages/nucs/swarms the following year...with plans to increase those!

Last year I KNEW 5 hives was my limit. Wheni had 6 I KNEW 10 would be the max. I've got plans to increase to 20+ hives this year...with a known limit of 25. Realisticcally, i know there ahs to be some sort of a limiting factor, but i haven't found what it is yet. I sure am enjoyin the process of seeking it :)

Welcome to bees, i hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Find a local beekeeping association and attend. It's a great support group for a bunch of folks addicted to the same thing.

Wow what a response! Thanks all and no I didn't know about starting with two but I do now. I figured that this would be another one of my many hobbies that tend to grow wildly out of control! It will keep me busy for sure. I was going up to a shop in Orem tomorrow to see what they have. Do a little shopping while I wait on the bees to show. Anyway thanks for the support.
