Gorgeous here today, 41 f, no wind and sunny. The bees are flying, pooping and seeking water. We checked sugar and found one side of our side-by-sides croaked. Dunno why, it looked good a couple weeks ago during the last sugar check, probably lost the queen. Everyone else looks great, thrifty on the sugar and nice populations for this time of year.
Our grand experiment this season will be to not feed pollen starting in Feb/March, open the sides of the broodnest early and add supers, perhaps in April if the weather looks good. Hoping for fewer swarms, will be interesting to see the honey harvest.
How is your winter going?

so far so good
went out today and cleaned entrances, had a wet snow from the east and the entrances had 5 inches of wet snow,, then some 20 degree nights.
Most were Iced up and needed the hive tool to scrape them off.
I'll sleep better now, here we are getting a niceish week forecasted 30s not to windy, was 35 today, actually not bad for the bees, 40 would be optimal , 5 degrees lower is better than 40 degrees lower.
