Ok, so I've been reading some folks' replies to the running only one deep discussion. Here's my question about how folks are working their bees...

1. Are you guys saying that running 2 deeps or 1 deep/1 medium gives the queen enough room to lay BUT that she won't go any higher?
2. If yes, then are you able to not run an excluder?

Just curious on you guys' thoughts and views.

I don't use excluders, use two deeps for brood boxes, and my experience is that the queen lays wherever she wants. Usually she stays in the brood boxes, but I'm not surprised when I find brood in my honey supers. Last summer I had a queen cross two filled honey supers to lay in the 3rd (topmost) super.

One thing I know for sure about bees: they don't read beekeeping books.

I run one deep and two mediums. The queen rarely uses the top medium. I like to leave them pretty fat over the winter though.
