So this year i’ve Built 10 swarm traps. I live in the fruit belt of sw michigan and near some lumber company forest land with huge trees. I’m trying to come up with a sound plan for trap placement. I have a location down the road with a clover field next to the forest. My neighbor has been...

Good day, Two years ago I was able to trap a nice fat swarm with only a wooden box of about 20 litres without any frames or foundation. However, it was a real pain moving them to the hive... This year I am trying to build some traps "by the book". I know, I know: there is no one single...

Hello, I only had two hives wintering this year. And unfortunately, my bees didn't survive. Apparently, blinded by my last year's success of all of my 3 hives surviving, I did a sloppy winterizing job. Now I am left with about 12 fully capped frames of honey and some of the "rest" -...

  5. Equipment/Hardware
Hello everyone, This year I'm doing swarm traps and 5-frame deep nucs. I won't to keep my equipment as interchangeable as possible, so im using the nucs as swarm traps as well. I don't really want a hole in the nuc boxes so i was wondering if anyone has drilled the hole on the bottom/floor of...

Hi, guys; my mentor plans to sell me 2 swarm traps before the next season (I don't have tools for making them myself) and I would like some ideas as to how to go with them. a) I've been told I should use lemongrass oil as an attractant and then situate the trap about 7' up a fruit tree to...

For the followers of my blog who may have not seen these last two posts… I originally put this over in the swarms forum a while back since it’s about my use of trap hives. But here it is again for those who look for my blog updates from here...
  8. Swarms, Trap-outs, and Cut-outs
I'm a new beekeeper and this is my first swarm trap. I have been reading lots of posts here which helped stack the deck in my favor. The trap followed D Coates NUC plan as a double deep it was baited with LGO and some melted wax/propolis scrapings from a friend. There are 5 foundationless (...

Ok, I own a campground and people leave lots of coolers behind. I saw a Coleman 48 and converted it into a 7deep nuc/ swarm trap. It seems like the perfect size with just a few modifications works great. Has anyone used these before? Figured I could also use it when I pull honey supers.
  10. Swarms, Trap-outs, and Cut-outs
What is the optimum size and configuration you use for swarm traps? I don't want to make them too small, does anyone have a good plan for a 10 frame deep trap? Thanks in advance, I want to build at least 4.

I am all set for a Spring trap out on this Ash tree, to close to road to fell the tree,to dead to cut out. The landowner wants the bees gone and I lost two hives this winter. I modified the Hogan trap with several changes, 7 deep frames, adjustable tunnel, hinged funnel door and a few other...
  12. Swarms, Trap-outs, and Cut-outs
With 2 bees trees to trap out this Spring i decided to build a Hogan Trap with several modifications. This trap features 7 deep frames, a hinged inner door for trap funnel or can be left open. In addition, the tunnel can telescope out of the box, or secure inside box with locked outer door for...

I've been trying my best to keep my hives from swarming & so far so good, but I'm wondering how everyone else is doing? With this stretch of warm weather were in now I would think we should start seeing some. I have to admit though as a newbee I have never seen one. Would love to catch one...

Hi! Some know me from my YouTube beek channel. Well, I accidentally got sidetracked and wrote a beekeeping book while trying to prepare for an ambitious DVD beekeeping project. I'm wondering about setting up swarm boxes in the city, and I'm wondering if any of you are doing it, have any experience and/or advice for doing it. Where have you set them? Have you had any specific challenges, and how successful have you been? I've got one set up in my yard, but I'm at a...
  19. Beekeeping 101
I have a swarm of bees in a tree about 50' up that have left my hive. I have a couple of swarm traps set up, but there are about 50-100 bees that have taken up residence in them (they are in two different locations). This is the third day the bees have been in the tree. The question I have is...
