  1. Everything Honey
This year in mid-August I ended up getting sick and in the hospital for 2 weeks. While in the hospital I received minor abdominal surgery and they said I shouldn't lift anything over around 20 lbs for 6 weeks. Since I can't lift too much weight, pulling full medium supers will be a bad idea this...

Can you share what is your maximum honey harvest for you around Chicago area? And, what is the last month the honey can be harvested here, or the last month of honey flow?
  3. Warre and other Compact Vertical Hives Forum
Hi-I've gone through the old threads to see if I could find the answer to my question but no luck. My first hive (Warre) was installed in March 2015 and did really well, got through the winter having used almost none of the candy I put in just in case. On May 15th this year they swarmed. I...
  4. Everything Honey
Hello! Once previously, I've used crush and strain, and it's worked pretty well. I haven't been able to find too much on the boards about it, but I'm wondering why people don't recommend freezing comb to kill moths before crushing, and if people have had better results with just metal sieves...

I'm a new beek, so go easy if there is an obvious answer to this. With so much talk about how many stores to leave the bees to over winter (40-90 lbs), why not leave them all they can produce and harvest any surplus when the spring nectar flow starts? Then you know they had enough to over winter.

I have 4 hives all going with varied success. My strongest hive has 3 medium supers about 80-90% full. They are from a package, but we gave them some drawn comb to start out on, and some of the supers had drawn comb. So that explains their fast start. I am confused about when to harvest and...
  7. Commercial Beekeeping
We have had a very rainy season around Houston and we just lost several hives to flooding. Chinese Tallow is our typical target, and we've made some but not enough to carry us through the year. Are there any other nectar flows in June/July in the Southern states where I can haul bees to and get...

Yes these questions will painfully highlight my inexperience with bees but I'll ask them anyway cause I want to learn: when do people typically harvest their honey? How many times can you potentially harvest? I'm located in the suburbia of NY and will (hopefully) be starting this year with an...
  9. Equipment/Hardware
Recieved my 6 frames from Flow Hive about 6 weeks ago, I was told that I was one of the 1st 500 supporters to crowd fund it on Indigogo. I know many people have mixed feelings about this product, how it works, is it good for the Bees and beekeeping. I also have doubts and questions. I have...
  10. Everything Honey
My last inspection showed my super is almost ready to extract (1st time I'll get honey!) My worry is that the frames are not completely capped (maybe 80%) of each...do I keep waiting til they're 100% or is it ok to extract now? (Need to rent equipment so need a bit of lead time to prepare)...

I am so excited but also a bit anxious about meeting the coming honey flow season that will start, if God so wills, in the coming April. This is my first year to have relatively many established colonies (41 in number) that are ready to deliver. I want to maximize the honey that I want to...

Happy Thanksgiving! There is a Dadant Junior Bench extractor for sale locally for $200 dollars. Of course this is a two frame extractor, but seems to be very good quality (I think). I have 8 hives and last year had 180 medium frames to extract. I am able to borrow a 4 frame extractor from...

First year beekeeper and am just wondering what to expect this fall here in Michigan. My hives are doing quite well and just added a new super with foundation. Do you think they will have time to draw it out before cold weather. I k ow their are a lot of variables just wanted some feedback.
  14. Beekeeping 101
Just wondering what others are using for an extractor. Been doing my research, but with so many options and price differences was wondering what other small scale beekeepers recommend and are using and why you went with that make and model.
  15. Top Bar & Horizontal Hive Forum
Some of you may have caught my first post mention of getting a boroscope (endoscope) to inspect my hive production. I'm lucky to live in Texas where I can start early and get a lot of honey between now and October. I'm still looking for a swarm and in two weeks I should bee ready to go and get...
