  1. Diseases and Pests
Hey guys! I had to make memes about hive beetles for my ENG 471 class lol. So I'm posting them here! Let me know if you like them! :)

So the other day I went out to my two hives and checked one I hadn't look at for a few weeks. The hive was built from three 8 frame medium brood boxes and one 8 frame honey super, when I installed the super they had been utilizing all of the frames in all three brood boxes. When I removed the...
  3. Everything Honey
I've been struggling for the past year till now every harvest I've made each and every frame has bubbles under the cappings, feels a bit slimy, has a little bitter aftertaste and it doesn't have the great honey aroma I usually get from my previous harvests, I read online and thought it's beetles...

Newbie here. First hive set up in May. Just went out to inspect, and they have all left. And I see hive beetles which I didn't see before! Ugh. So, I'm sure this is old hat to folks, but what do I do now. I live in Los Angeles, and I have read that freezing the frames (of which I have 9-11...
  9. Welcome Forum
Hi Everyone! My name is Aleta (pronounced aleeta). My husband and I just bought some hives and equipment. We thought we were getting 4 hives, but ended up with 2 live hives. We actually have already done a rescue of a swarm hive and placed that in a hive box. That was really very...
  10. Diseases and Pests
I have a elder box bug problem, they seem to love my hive and the bees don't like them at all. I watch the bees try and chase them off but they keep coming back. I've even put several essential oils all over the hive to keep them away. But of course they don't seem to care. Has anyone had this...

As I crunch through the frozen mulch and grass this morning, a smile comes across my face as I think of all those hive beetle larva freezing to death. Or so I hope. Virginia didn't really have a hive beetle problem until this last few years - and we've had very mild winters the last 2 years...
  12. Diseases and Pests
I am a first year beekeeper with my first 10 frame hive and I need urgent help. I got my colony from a nuc in April. They seemed to be doing great despite a few small hive beetles here and there. Well, a couple of weeks ago I made a horrible rookie mistake with my top feeder. I took out...
  13. Diseases and Pests
I finally got my observation hive back up and running last week. This morning, I went to check on the girls and watched the queen lay a few eggs. Right before I closed the outside doors though, I noticed a little black movement at the botttom of a plastic frame. There was a little black...

I've been thinking a lot about the beetles, and about traps. This was the first year I saw beetles take hold in Va with a vengeance. With 2012 being the warmest year ever, it makes sense we had to deal with more beetles, especially after the warm winter we had. I do a LOT of cutouts and found...
  15. Diseases and Pests
Okay, that was a teaser tagline. It hasn't happened yet, but I think it might be. Anyway, we have a guy here spraying and telling homeowners not to worry about the honey as "robber bees" would take care of it. I just pulled 5 gallons of honeycomb (not including the brood comb) out of person's...

I made some splits a while back and in one half of one split the bees abandoned the hive, leaving 3 frames of mostly capped brood. :( I didn't notice this immediately; it took at least 2 weeks and maybe almost a month. When found the brood was being consumed by maggots, apparently the larval...

I run 10 frame mating nucs partitioned three-ways. I am currently finding quite a few small hive beetles in each partition. Can anyone suggest a way I can make a trap to go into each partition using oil? Thanks in advance.

Iam a brand new beekeeper with one hive, going well, but discovered a few beetles. I'ma aware of the trap using DTE (diatomaceous earth). Question: we have pool grade DTE, and I've read that you cannot use that in the hive. Can anyone tell me why? Thanks, SueBeeH
