Default Is this a normal amount of drone cells?

Hive background: This is a strong hive that overwintered well. We currently have to deep HB on and one super. The super was added a week or so ago. This seems like a lot of drone cells. Do we have a hive that's preparing to swarm or is something else going on? The brood chambers aren't completely full. Didn't see any queen cells either.

Where they put drone comb varies greatly. If you have two deeps and a super and that is most of your drone, that is not much drone. I would expect they will sneak some in along bottom bars if they can't get happy in your super.
It is hard to design a safety net that some will not use as a hammock.

ok, thanks. I guess I was expecting honey in the super instead of drone cells.

At least they are drawing out the super. If you want drone free supers it pretty much requires an excluder. But then expect drone cells on your brood frames and they may put it there even if you give them the supers.
