Default New to beekeeping in the Okanogan Valley of Washington state

I took a beekeeping class in Spokane, WA last year and am starting out with four hives this year. Two years ago I acquired twenty acres in the Okanogan Valley, ten in hay, nine in apples, which are leased out to an orchardist with a nearby orchard. I'm not happy about the sprays, and the hay equipment is expensive, so I hire out the cutting, leaving me with doing irrigation, which isn't much fun. So I hope to turn the place into a bee sanctuary and raise flowers and vegetables. The challenge is going to be dealing with the pesticides of nearby orchards. I hope to provide enough forage on site that they won't need to wander off. I've read quite a bit off this forum already, and hope to learn more. I did try posting an immediate concern, but the post did not show up, so I tried again a day later, and a quick screen informed me a moderator had to review it first. Maybe I should have done the introduction first! Personal name is James, handle is ComfortablyNumb, often abbreviated 'CN'.

    welcome aboard cn!

i haven't figured out why sometimes a moderator has to approve the first post and sometimes not.

we moderators mostly watch over the content, but the administration of the site is taken care of by the company that owns it.

anyway, your posts are visible now. i would like to suggest that you make your first posts/queries in the beekeeping 101 subforum.

best of luck to you with your first hives!

Thank you. I posted twice (so the second would be a double post) in the 'Hive Placement' thread, but still don't see them. So I'll try posting in the thread you suggest, and apologies in advance if it turns out to be a triple post.

    Hello Greg,

Know it well, I have property in Stevens County as well, a farm in Orient and a Victorian (currently for sale) in Colville.

Welcome to Beesource, ComfortablyNumb. I got a chuckle out of your irrigation comment as I remember well having to irrigate hay fields as an adolescent. I live in Kentucky now and folks around here have no concept of needing to apply supplemental water to production crops.

I am also interested to read about how your 'pollinator sanctuary' project turns-out. I have been working on a small 6 acre plot of my own with mixed results.

Best of luck to you with your colonies this year.

Thank you for the warm welcome, Litsinger. I have a combination of wheel and hand lines, presently trying to put together another wheel line to eliminate some hand line. The orchard is watered with micro sprinklers that have to be checked every time they are started as they are prone to falling over or clogging.

I would be happy to do a thread on the farm and planned transformation once I figure out the right forum for it.
