Default Any beekeepers sick w CV-19? SURVEY

    * Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong forum *

I get stung about 2-3 times a week
I run 60 hives, also do removals

For people out there who also get stung regularly: have any of you gotten sick w the corona virus?

I cannot find any beekeepers who have caught it, or show symptoms, whatever

    Thanks

Well, except in a few countries it's still a very rare bug, so it isn't surprising you have not heard of any particular person or group catching it. In the places it is common, Italy, Spain, China, they have bigger problems than posting to a website that they did not or did catch a disease.

Corona is one of several of the classes of common cold viruses. I wouldn't expect anything to help with Covid-19 unless it also helps with common colds. Same things help resist it and same things help you catch it. Do bee stings prevent colds? never heard that but I suppose it isn't impossible.

Carona virus is not spread by bees, so being stung has nothing to do with contracting the virus. Stay home, wash your hands, donít touch your face, cough/sneeze into the crease of your elbow. Itís a good time to be a bee right now. Stay healthy!

I can't see any way being a beekeeper could possibly prevent a person from contracting the virus - but there might just be an outside possibility that our reaction to it might be less severe than others, on the basis that our 'immunity system'(*) is, on average, provoked into action far more often than that of non-beekeepers.

But - it would be foolish in the extreme to even begin to be thinking of relying on this. 18 year-old's are dying from Covid-19 here in Britain - no-one appears to be exempt.

I'd make a bet that percentage wise there are even fewer piano tuners than beekeepers amongst the covid stricken!

    Abstract

Bee venom (BV) from honey bee (Apis Melifera L.) contains at least 18 pharmacologically active components including melittin (MLT), phospholipase A2 (PLA2), and apamin etc. BV is safe for human treatments dose dependently and proven to possess different healing properties including antibacterial and antiparasitidal properties. Nevertheless, antiviral properties of BV have not well investigated. Hence, we identified the potential antiviral properties of BV and its component against a broad panel of viruses. Co-incubation of non-cytotoxic amounts of BV and MLT, the main component of BV, significantly inhibited the replication of enveloped viruses such as Influenza A virus (PR8), Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). Additionally, BV and MLT also inhibited the replication of non-enveloped viruses such as Enterovirus-71 (EV-71) and Coxsackie Virus (H3). Such antiviral properties were mainly explained by virucidal mechanism. Moreover, MLT protected mice which were challenged with lethal doses of pathogenic influenza A H1N1 viruses. Therefore, these results provides the evidence that BV and MLT could be a potential source as a promising antiviral agent, especially to develop as a broad spectrum antiviral agent.
Yup - not so crazy - certainly a good starting point for some targeted research ...

There's literally a federal law right now making it a crime to gouge prices due to the coronavirus.

I get stung quite a bit, and seem to contract the occasional cold, same as everyone else.

Got to consider that even if I got stung say, 20 times on a particular day, the amount of venom in my body, against my 220 lbs of biomass, would be incredibly dilute, and not even sure it would distribute right throughout my body, or as would be needed for covid 19, my lungs, in any quantity.

What I am going to do though, is get a crack pipe and start smoking a very small bit of propolis every day.

Got a sneaking suspicion that'll do more harm than good, but, let me know how it goes

I took a different approach. When dad was quite ill toward the end he was struggling with breathing, so we bought a portable oxygen concentrator for him which he used until he passed. It's been on a shelf in the garage for a couple years, this last week it came out and we gave it the once over, made sure batteries are charged, hoses replaced, etc. A ventilator it is not, but, it will go a long way to helping somebody with breathing troubles.

Hey, as long as the propolis is made from cannabis resins, I suspect you will feel better, or at least not care if you are sick.
Thankfully, the bees are smarter than I am. They are doing well, in spite of my efforts to help them.

Grozzie you may be very pleased of that oxygen concentrator. I spoke with a local guy who got the disease he is a fit and healthy 25 year old. He said that on the worst day he was very afraid, he could hardly breath and felt like he might just choke and die anytime. But that was the worst day after that he started getting better. But he said it was scary.

With you two on that, not sure if it would be good or bad. The idea came from a German guy who has moved here, he brought with him a specialist propolis vapouriser which he uses every day. Weird thing though, although he is a hobby beekeeper, he buys the propolis vials. He does it every day, the vaporiser is very mild so as not to damage the propolis, apparently it is quite popular in Europe.

Hey, you never know. I read somewhere that in mid ages people who worked in brew-houses were much more resilient to any infectious diseases. Now we know that beer east provides whole complex of vitamin B, which in turn help you immunity system. So, point one, drink a lot of unfiltered beer. Point two - who knows, may be propolis, or bee stings, or just being outside in a sunshine and getting vitamin D is/are all you need to help you body to fight this or any other things off.
