Default How to make DIY Apivar for a 1/100th the price?

OK, so long story short, Apivar is grossly over priced. At $3 per strip, and $12-15 per colony for a single treatment, it's the most expensive mite treatment available.

However, this doesn't have to be the case. One can simply make their own Apivar strips.

One can purchase Taktic/Amitraz, enough to make 1000 strips for approximately $100.

The question is now: how to make the time released strips, or material to place in the hives?

Are there any insiders here who work for Apivar or Mann lake, or another bee keeping company who know what type of material the apivar strips contain?

Edit. This is just a "theoretical discussion" on how to save a bunch of $$$$$.

Perhaps a local beekeeping supply store will see this thread, and realize how easy it is to make apivar strips, and then make a competitor product that charges only $1 per strip.

You won't gain traction here, making apistan treatments is best left to the pros. It costs a lot for a reason.

The public information I have available is that Apivar is a acaricide produced by a French company, VETO PHARMA, and the components of each strip is 0.5 g of amitraz and ethylene vinyl acetate as excipient.

One would assume that everyone here would know better than to apply apivar or Taktic/Amitraz ingredients with honey supers present?

    In theory:

No need to make, one can buy the powder, and heat it up a bit to make a strip, and then insert the pesticide when it cools down to a workable temperature.

Most plastics begin to melt at relatively low temperatures.

It's basically just a plastic, and it needs to be heated, molded, and then the Taktic/Amitraz mixed into the mold with the plastic.

    No.

Manufactured pesticides are required under Federal law to comply with FIFRA:

    .
You can read the link for yourself, but in a nutshell, compliance with the law [in terms of manufacturing pesticides] is complex. You really can't comply "rolling your own".

    I see.

Well, then disclaimer: this is just "food for thought" not something to actually do .

correct, it's illegal, just like using oxytet and oav with honey supers on.

illegal 'food for thought' is something that is better not condoned here on this public forum.
