Boy, if you can get good nucs thatís the way to go. I did both last year and the nucs won hands down because they had an established laying queen out of the gate as well as brood frames. Even if you have a great package queen (and you may) she will take a few days to get started laying. Then it will take 21 days to have the first brood hatch out and 26 for drones. So youíre fighting attrition with a package for bees who only live 6 weeks in the spring and summer. Plus depending on the age of the bees that were shaken in you can have an imbalance of duties. Who is the colony going to blame for an imbalance? The queen. So they may supercede her and often do. If you are going that route do what you can to put in drawn comb for them to build on instead of new foundation. I love my package hive but gave them a head start with drawn comb and babied them more than the others.
