Default Best way to thin syrup

How do you thin out a thick syrup? Do you mix with a thinner syrup? Or do you use water and heat only? Or water, heat, and another syrup mix? What works best to feed bees?
We put out the syrup without doing any mixing and the bees did not touch the syrup.

Being too thick is not the reason for them not taking it. You have not included your location so we have to guess about how cold it might be. Bees lose mobility if their core body temperature drops too low so they wont tank up with the syrup if it is cold. How are you presenting the syrup to them? Open feeding, entrance feeder, hive top feeder, jar inside an extra hive body on top etc.?

What kind of syrup are you using? Most of us mix our own using sugar and water. Prosweet is ready to use right out of the pail.
Thankfully, the bees are smarter than I am. They are doing well, in spite of my efforts to help them.

At the risk of being snarky.

    • Big batch: water + drill + paint stirrer.
    • Little batch: water + spoon.

If the syrup is already mixed no heat should be necessary.

If I need dilute syrup then I just add water to the 'thick' syrup and shake the container - no need to heat. BUT - as already said, there may well be a another reason why your syrup is not being taken. Low temperature probably - much depends on where you're located ...

Location-less questions/answers are less than useful.

I generally find that bees will not take syrup for one of three reasons:
    1. There is a pretty good nectar flow happening
    2. It is too cold for them to take it
    3. The hive has serious mite or other disease issues

    hope this helps

    4. There is no room in the hive for any more syrup and they are "honey bound"
