GG - correction! Pelase change who to "what to believe", like verifiable facts, tests that can reproduced. Example: tensile or tension testing has a load gauge, you can measure the extension of a piece of metal multiple ways, typically a strain gauge which measures a change in legnth by a change in electrical resistance. It produces a stress - strain curve which can be reproduce time after time and the modulus of elasticity does nto change for the alloy at that specific temperature. Twin Trade Towers fell because the temperature changed a column buckled ( Euler Buckling I think) and the impact load took out the next set of columns. THe whole thing went down with one pancake load increasing as each stage failed - as designed and repeatable. Stupid way to limit collateral damage. Back to the subject.... I choose to follow Physics for which I understand in the basic Newtonian world and some higher level stuff. The solar flares and polar Vortex are tough. Polar Vortex is not so tough anymore; computational fluid dynamics and gas dynamics modeling is getting better. (once created a perfectly unstable. unpredictable vortex shedding machine.) The one thing I am looking to understand is how energy is transferred from one atom or molecule to another by elastic collision - the kinetic pin ball machine model does not do it for me. I have to spend some time on it. Sublimation of oxalic for Varroa treatment is very repeatable but how did the all that latent heat get transferred across the metal boundary to the OA? How does water evaporate at different ambient temperatures? Peel the onion layers - that's what it takes. Love how the bees control the dew point inside the hive - most times - a hypothesis with some supporting data.

Cute answer - socialist / capitalist - a dream. So I propose a new concept Contrarians! A group of people who do not agree with socialist or capitalist in total. They are color blind who worry about the whole world. People who are self motivated, think, continue to learn, solve problems and seek rewards,......and share. There are some and some are even very rich in money equivalents.

    ogada,
the battery comment is for the Electric vehicles, in 8-10 years the battery packs need to be changed , as they are worn out. These old pack will require recycle as they are very toxic to toss in a land fill. And in a wreck , things get spilled into the road way/environment
Also the rare earths require a lot of mining to even build them. currently Rare earths are in the battery packs. this mining is at times strip mining.

And of course the FACT that the electricity in many places is Coal or Nat Gas, with the transmission line loss,, still causes the CO2 and Carbon issues.

so good on the ELE cars, now we need fusion or Nuclear for the power , THEN they would be cleaner. Some of the same tree huggers do not want Nuclear power, some we have that to deal with as well.

Here is a read that may make you question where your beliefs place you on the global survival dilemma. Not a pretty picture no matter who's version you subscribe to.

Might Greenland/Denmark become the next "Qatar"

Aside from destructive mining practices, it could be nice to unseat China as the worlds largest rare earth mineral exporter.

One of the more recent large gold discoveries is in Northern Michigan. Don't know if it is economically feasible to mine it and have proper environmental protections. My understanding is that it would be an open pit operation.

    https://www.greatlakesnow.org/2017/0...-key-approval/

It might be possible to mine responsibly, The fact is, we all use minerals. Divorce yourself from that reality and the consequences would mean giving up your cell phone, vehicles, etc and returning to a very simple way of living with a lot of hard work. All the same I really hate the reality that many of the fish in the great lakes have had at one time serious levels of pollutants in their bodies. Some of these pollutants have lessened some, but I have to read the recommended yearly consumption rates by species and size every year.

So on one hand I don't mind the pressure that some environmental special interest groups put on industry. It helps to pressure them to drive innovation and responsibility. On the other hand I don't want to return to the stone age way of living. So I hope the DEQ overkill's the regulation requirements in respect to water run off considering a possible unusual rain event and the flooding as a result. Thinking about the 500 year flood of the Mississippi river a few years back. Would it really add too much cost to the mining plan to make the settling pond berms higher?

Tree hugging was my way of determining DBH (diameter breast high) before felling a tree.

Watching the movie first would give more background to the discussion of motives and methods of those who propose cures. I am not impressed with the talk of the fat cats proposing belt tightening. Usually it is the ones with no power who are expected to tighten their belts.

I think the population problem is an issue of density rather than numbers. Flying coast to coast and looking out the window and you see vast areas of low human density. Not all of it is pleasant to live in, but considering that people from some countries would consider our harsher climates to be a vacation as compared to theirs kind of says something.

Crofter, I did read the article and pondered for a day.

IMO the same cadre of power grabbers went from Global warming to Climate change , and now to Population will destroy us. The first 2 did not stick for what ever reasons so they are shifting to a new way to have people give up their rights "to save the planet"
They want nothing more than control of the "planet" not just the US, and for it to be handed to them.
Ironic they show a picture of Billion airs flying into Davos to meet to solve the world's problems.
Hard for me to wrap my mind around Michael Moore doing anything good for others.
Rarely people go from the dark side to the good side, well eccept for Darth vader on his death bed.

Trin, Rather the problem is public education. People so easily accept the "experts" opinions. Trained to accept. Look today at the COVID experts, following their expert opinion almost puts us in the Green Raw deal, in one shot. No flying, no travel, no wasting fuel on concerts and ball games....Meat consumption down.

I see some very deep and controlling manipulation of what is called "ones rights". People are very attached to these issues and that makes them "hot buttons" that can be pushed. In this way I think that people can be influenced to fight for the right to do what is to their long term detriment.

Dont know how precisely correct it is but have seen it written that a sight seeing flight from the US to view the great pyramids of Egypt converts more energy than the physical expenditure of the people in building them. I really feel that I do not have the right to engage in such abuse of the "common good".

The dark side of this basic problem is that any mechanism to curtail such activity is subject to abuse of power. If it is human engineered and implemented it is subject to the inherent (I think) "inhumanity of man". We simply do not at the present stage of development, have the sapience to make wise collective strategy for our common survival.

Here is some food for thought regarding our collective stupidity: https://questioneverything.typepad.com/ by George Mobus, an American systems analyst.

on the fuel yes the "BTUs" in a pile of rice is less than the 100s of gallons of jet fuel. is it "right with the world" to use it to look??
Maybe virtual tours can help with that.

Same can be said for the cruise ships, build them drive them on the high seas for entertainment basically.
I have some friends that fly somewhere every years , beaches and snorkeling.. In that vein use more energy , that the entire life of their great great grand parents, when measured against Hay for travel.

make wise collective strategy for our common survival. Canadians survival , North america's survival , world survival? IMO getting off planet is the next frontier, connecting to work on that is the next hurtle. So will the rocket engineer have the same rights as the goat herder on the serengeti? At some point the power will decide who gets fed and what we work on. odd place we find our selves....

First, I want to say how much I have enjoyed this discussion!!!
As for batteries, I got really excited about saline based batteries a few years ago.
    Far safer and non-polluting.
Probably about time to check up on the progress of this technology.
    Here is an old article:

I have exactly ONE more hive than you.
That makes my opinion beyond dispute!
