Default Do queens decrease in size in the fall?

I inspected 3 different hives yesterday. All 3 hives were strong. I do not think that they have recently swarmed. They all had eggs, larvae, and capped worker brood, so I felt they were queen right. But they all had small queens that looked like virgin queens. And I did not find a 2nd queen in any of the hives. Do the queens sort of decrease in size in the fall?

Yes. They decrease anytime they are not laying as much and especially when they are not laying at all.
