I don't understand the implications, so I have always just ignored them. What changes if you accept them?

You can follow their posts under the friends tab on your "My Activity" page. And you can brag to others that "I'm friends with Riverderwent." That's really the main thing.

Why do they need my permission to follow my posts?

As a "Friend", it is a little easier to follow someone's posts, maybe a click or two less effort.

Handy to know. I've always accepted them but never been able to figure what the point is.

I have seen similar ideas turn into divisive clique contests, though that does not seem to be the case on BSource.

Beekeeping can be an isolating hobby.

If you accept the request you will see their posts. That can be a good thing or it can be an annoyance. If it is annoying you can click an "unfollow" button and no longer see their posts. They will be none the wiser. When I see a dozen fuzzy kitten posts in a row,too many "I love Hillary" posts or too much salty language, I unfollow.
