After reading this article about late season splits
(multiple times) Ive decided to take this route this year. More specifically, build up a large, healthy population of bees leading up to the main honey flow in late June/July, harvest honey, then split colonies down and prepare them for winter. Ive seen the video of Michael Palmer and how he weighs his hives before each winter and with 2 deeps and a medium he has hives weighing over 200# if I remember correctly.
My question is does anyone that follows this method of late season splits have an ideal weight for a single deep over wintered in southern Michigan?
Also any other tips, experiences and just general comments are more than welcome.
Thanks in advance!
