    Default HI from RI

    Hi from RI.

This is my 1st hive. I installed my first bees on 4/22. The weather has been really bad. The queen didn't get released until 4/27-29? I haven't been able to get into the hive since 5/9. I'm hoping for chance to get in tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed hoping to find newly hatched bees.

Welcome to beesource. And good luck on your bees !!! Feed them well, and check weekly at your start up. Then judge how often you need to go in. I likely weekly, and later.i can do every 2 weeks if something comes up that I can't go inside the hives. Then back to a weekly for me. For sure every 2nd week a thorough inspection anyway. Go, and happy beekeeping from another new beekeeper in Alabama!!!🐝

    Hi and Welcome!

Have you considered using a manipulation cloth? All you need is a clean dark bath towel with you on your first inspection. It shouldn't be so big as to cover the landing when used, just the top of the hive if possible. Roll it back and you can pull your outer most frame and if there is nothing on it, set it and any bees in the upturned lid. Roll it back for each subsequent frame to keep the bees calm and in the dark. If you have 2 you can use one over the hive that you roll back and another to cover the frames you place back in the hive leaving only a frame or 2 exposed at any one time. TIP - Always pick up your cloth and never drag it across the frames. Also be sure you don't rest your hands or tools on the frames or edge of the box...it won't be pretty.

Have fun, take your time and always try to go in and get out of your hive with no casualties, you included.
