I have the impression that the forum software is now automatically resizing so you dont have to worry about it. Am I correct?

i tried uploading a couple of photos yesterday that were a little over 2 mb and nothing happened.

when i reduced them down to a very small file size they uploaded without a hitch.

i guess i could experiment and see how big of a file the server will accept.

I just attempted a 3000x4000 pixel file upload, and it failed, so I don't think there is "no limit".

However, here is a 1024x768 pixel file that worked:

I'm fairly sure that a file that size would not have worked a year ago.

Here is a bigger one, 2440x830 pixels, 476Kb:

It appears that allowable sizes are bigger than they were, but its not clear what the upper limit is.

I'm not absolutely sure how a limit would be defined. Clearly more pixels means a bigger file size, but what the exact relationship is I have not researched.

The 3000x4000 pixel file I mentioned above was 7.3Mb.

In looking at some other vBulletin sites the limit appears to be expressed in file size, rather than pixels.

Barry had it set to 640x480. I don't know if that is still the limit. That is what I configure mine to.

the reason for asking is when zooming in on a posted photo it works better with more pixels/bigger file size.

No doubt about it. You can always store it on whatever photo hosting site you use and whatever resolution you choose and then just provide a link to that.

Its a hassle have a limit in the first place. It means that -depending on the file size- sometimes an upload works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Yes, experienced members may be aware of the issues and resize their photos in advance, but not everyone is aware of the issue, and when an oversize image upload fails, it really doesn't offer anything useful as to why.

So, aside from resizing a photo with an image editor program installed on your system, here are some alternatives:

    - Use a free online resizing utility. Here is one what works for me: http://www.picresize.com/

    - Use a free photo host, and paste a link to your photo in your Beesource message. I like https://postimages.org/

Postimage.org handles all sizes of photos that I have tried automatically*. And if you choose the "Thumbnail for forums" option, the thumbnail image automatically displayed in the forum thread can be progressively enlarged to show full original image resolution if the viewer chooses, while at the same time respecting those forum members that may be reading Beesource on a "bandwith limited" carrier (a la a 'phone'.)

*Postimage.org does have a file size limit:
What is the maximum allowed file size on PostImage?
Images uploaded by both anonymous uploads and free accounts are limited to 12Mb and 10k x 10k pixels. Premium accounts are limited to 24Mb and 10k x 10k pixels.
