A few of you may know I write science fiction. After keeping bees, it occurred to me that Robert Heinlein (Starship Troopers) had a very poor understanding of eusocial colonies, and his view of hivelike "bug" civilizations has colored every major story line since. This includes Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and Star Trek's Borg.
To this end, I wrote a short story to try to set the record straight. I'm a member of a science fiction think tank (http://www.sigmaforum.org/), so if there ever was an alien invasion by such a civilization, I could actually be called in for advice.
Anyway, the story appears in this month's Analog Science Fiction and Fact, under the title "Beek". Analog just posted my accompanying blog, on how to write short fiction.
