I've been eying Seek Thermals IOS device. FLIR is the leader in this space but I'm cheap and the low end FLIR or Seek devices would get the job done.

laser thermometer is what you are asking about I bet, they work to sense the temps of the outside of the hive, they just don't sense beyond a few inches in depth. if the cluster is tight in the center you won't get a reading on them just the hive exterior temp. I tried them for the last 3 seasons during winter, and will again this winter.
a flir is on my list but not for quite awhile I still have other toys and tools to acquire before I even think about going that direction.
laser therms sell for $12- $20 on amazon prime, if you don't like it send it back.

Well, I was reading reviews about the FLIR ONE I've had my eye on, and here is an excerpt from an Amazon review:

Not likely to be much help to us until it will function without Internet access... :-/

I have a high $$ one and I don't need the net. For just readings. Never heard that one before.

I had 2 cheep laser thermometers from Home Depot .... like $ 35 each.

used one on a cutout I did from a garage wall..... I could tell exactly where the main colony was located by the heat of the drywall......

Lburou is speaking of a FLIR (forward looking infra-red) camera.

Harbor Freight has a temp gun, with coupon, for $9.99 you get what you pay for though (picked up some sandpaper to try - couldn't stand up to the sanding lol).
