Here in our area a one of the chain grocery stores, Farm Fresh, run a sale 3 or 4 times a year for off brand sugar at $0.99 for a 4 lb. bag if you buy 4. Who buys only four? That's why they have carts for. I get those looks too when you wheel up with 40 bags in your cart. I usually make a couple of visits when it's on sale.

Bought a 50lb bag of sugar from WinCo for $24.50. That's 49 cents a pound.

While leaving Walmart a couple weeks ago with a shopping cart full of sugar, I was approached 3 different times with requests to buy "shine." Couldn't convince one guy that I was just making sugar syrup.

Have been watching this thread and thinking Im paying a bit more for sugar here in Aus. Only buying a few 2 or 3kg bags as I need them and paying up to $1.5/kg so around 70c/lb.
Was in one of the German chain grocery stores we have here in Aus yesterday, 2kg for $1.78 works out 40c/lb, take the conversion rate from $AU to $US into account and it is closer to 30c/lb.

Our Walmart last week reduced their 25# bags to $8.74 each. I bought the 5 bags they had on hand and when checking out told the cashier that was all I needed today as I had bought my corn yesterday!

Have used quite a few one-liners on curious ppl while purchasing a cart-full of sugar.
One day was at the store with wife getting sugar. Woman comes up and asks "what's all the sugar for" like she was a cop or something. We had well over 100# of sugar in the cart.
Wife immediately spoke up and said it so fast that I was stunned when I realized what she'd just done.
She told that lady that "we're baking cookies for a diabetic neighbor". The sour looks on everyone's face who'd heard...priceless.
    I picked a good woman.
