Default Wax melter for small commercial operation

    Hello forum!

My husband and I run 600 hives and we're looking for a wax melter sized for this scale of operation. We don't currently have anything sufficient since we just increased our number of beehives significantly. Searching online, most options I have found are too small, and a few are too big (sized for the bigger commercial guys).

Who manufactures something that can handle cappings from 600 hives?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

    -JJ

That's hard for me to answer because if I knew, I wouldn't have to ask this question. : ) Part of my uncertainty is what size of operation different pieces of equipment are appropriate for.

    But I think...

    Too small =
    solar melters for sure
    Dadant mini melter maybe? https://www.dadant.com/catalog/extra...ed-mini-melter

Too big (really just too expensive, it would be nice to have extra capacity but not if we have to pay more than we can afford) = Melters costing $4,000+ (e.g. Dadant electromelt)

Are you looking to melt down dry cappings?

Yes, we have a cappings spinner, so they will be pretty dry. Of course, when melted there is a certain amount of honey that will separate off and that we need to be able to drain off.

Looking at the Maxant site, it looks like your biggest melter is 6 gallon, yes? Which seems both too small, I think, and it looks like it might be meant for totally dry wax for candlemakers?

So a water jacketed tank would sufice? All of the 600 series bottling tanks can be used to melt wax as well, anywhere from 16 gallon to 360 gallon.
We have made custom sized wax processing tanks used to clean and separate cappings.

I would listen to Maxant. He has more experience than all of us.

How much honey do you think is left? Is it worth trying to recover?
