    Default #8 Screen

I see #8 screen referenced a lot in dealing with bees. Is this 1/8 inch screen? No one in this little town had ever heard of #8 screen.

#8 = 8 per inch, or 1/8th". It's very specific in use so don't let them push some other size on you that's 'close enough'. Look until you find it, then buy more than you think you'll need. It gets used.

Yes, it's 1/8" inch screen ( eight square to the inch) - and often hard to find in non-beekeeping situations.

Betterbee sells it by the foot and rolls.

I have also heard that some of the big national chain hardware stores (Ace, Tru-Value etc.) can special order it for you.

It's more expensive than ordinary hardware cloth, but nowhere near as pricey #7 (seven squares to the inch). That stuff must be made of platinum!

I keep a small roll on hand as it is endlessly useful for making stuff. Bees can't get through, though occasionally one silly girl will stick her head through and get stuck.

"#8 Hardware Cloth" to be exact. I just bought a roll from Amazon to use for beekeeping projects.

Bought some yesterday at Tru Value. It was pretty inexpensive. If you can, look for the #8 galvanized as it doesn't stretch like the regular does. We use it to make our introduction cages.

Home Depot and Menard's do not carry it locally. Nor does Hardware Hank. I found it at Ace Hardware by the foot x 36 inches wide. $2.95/foot.

I got mine at a local lumber yard.

They cut off the length I needed, and charged by the linear foot.

Never forget about the mom & pop store. They need us to stay in business!

Thanks to all. I'd did some educating at our two hardware stores in town. The owners of one just gave me a 1 foot by 3 foot piece for no charge.
