Thank you everyone.......I was wondering do we even have beetles in Michigan. I know in the fall we get thousands of Chinese Beetles (looks like Lady Bugs). I hope they don't mess with my hives!

Kelley Bees has an 8 frame oil tray you order separately from the bottom board. Their screened bottom board can be modified by removing a back cleat so the tray (sold separately) fits under it and makes it an oil tray style bottom board. It's on page 14 of their catalog.

I have used Pigeon Mtn for 8 frame freeman boards. Very happy with what I got service and product wise.

Would like to piggyback on this thread. Does anyone sell a tray for a 5 frame nuc? Have made a could but not completely happy with the outcome.

yes eheartwood.com does have 5, 8, and 10 frames. One advantage of theirs is that the tray has "ridges" running across so the hive does not have to be perfectly level front to back to have the oil or soapy water everywhere. Although it should be level side to side for this (and for drawing comb). A disadvantage is if the tray is not inserted all the way, bees somehow squeeze in and drown.

In their catalog, it is item number 57-T8 (8 frame), located on page 14. Kelley Beetle Trap & Mite Count Tray, cost $21.95 plus S & H.

    Hello Gary,
Have you tried this method and the product from Kelleys that you mentioned? I would much rather easily modify my SBB than buy new Freeman Beetle Traps. Thanks, Teresa

    Teresa,
I make my own screened bottom boards and leave a space that's about 1 1/4"-1 1/2" top to bottom so I can slide a disposable aluminum 1/2 cake sheet pan under the hive. I put 1/8" hardware cloth under the bottom and have a board that goes across the back for a door that I use to block off the oil tray so bees don't get in the tray but gives me access so I can check it for beetles and change the oil when I need to change it. The disposable pans run about a dollar each so it's very inexpensive compared to buying the Kelley trays. They work just as well for me.

I build mine for about 8 dollars. I use the rusty one, with a few different mods. I love them.
