4/14/16, 24019, Roanoke, VA (off of Plantation near Elizabeth Arden). Medium sized swarm in an evergreen tree. Had to resort to a pole saw to get it down.

Caught and boxed 4-5# Swarm off of one of my hives. Noticed they were broodless last weekend but still packed with bees. Don't know if it was primary or secondary, but it was a dandy. G

Default Got my first Swarm of the year

I type this message 3 time but keep getting screwed up by photobucket so there is no picture. Basically got it about 75 feet from 2 of my other hives and based on what was going on inside fo those I don't think they came from my hives. Someone on here said bee attack bees. I'm a believer based on last year the the start of this year.

Not _quite_ a swarm yet, but a state apiary inspector today found a capped queen cell in one of my Russian bee hives. Swarm can't be far off. The bees still seemed to be there with last year's marked queen, but that cell (and some others) are now in splits. A bout of cool temps due soon, including snow forecast for Sunday. More queen cells in construction in other hives, also destined for splits as soon as can be managed. Perhaps this can be managed. Newbie.

I'm in serious need of a swarm control class. So far this year I have captured 9 swarms out of trees around my hives. Are they all mine, I don't know but most likely. I know a couple are because I saw them swarm. Eight of the swarms are from my backyard where I have 4 hives. Didn't get 3 of them, just couldn't work it out. Don't know how many swarmed at the other site where I have 2 hives. I know of one because I got it. Have one sitting in a holly tree right now in the backyard. It's on the trunk of the tree and about 20' up and all I can do is look at. I am completely of everything. No boxes and now deep frames and about 10 sheets of deep foundation. Ordered supplies a week ago, just waiting right now. If I though I could get those bees I think I would put them in a cardboard box. But being wrapped around the trunk I can't get them loose.

4/10/17 - Gladys, VA, 24554. I believe this was a primary swarm from one of my own hives.

4/10/17 - Roanoke, VA (South Roanoke City not far from the hospital). Looks like a primary swarm (4 or 5 pounds maybe), probably from the surrounding oaks.
