Picked up a nice swarm from our old farm on Wed 5/19/2010, Ashville, Ohio 43103. Just after noon. These are from a semi "feral" hive that was part of my grandfather's hives some 25 years ago. Swarm broke off from hive that has lived in an old building for about 20 years. Have them installed in a new hive at my place about 30 miles away (43107) and they seem to be doing well. Set them up about 300 yards from my existing hive.

2nd Swarm call this year. Nice size swarm they had actually moved into an overhang of a garage about twelve feet up with easy access. Extremely gentle bees, no stings or headbutts.
About the size of a basketball. We used the beevac and it worked great, very few dead bees. Total time less than an hour.

3rd. Swarm call 5/26/2010. Small size swarm located in a tree about 7 ft. from the ground. Only about a quart or so. They had been there for a little while they had already built some small comb . Located in Boardman, Ohio.
Enough for a small nuc box.

Retrieved about a 5 lb. swarm tonight about ten feet up in a pine tree, in town. Very docile bees. Filled a five frame nuc box.
Very late in the year, but hated to just leave them. We are going to see how they do for a little while and then combine them with another hive.

Yesterday was the first 60+ degree day in weeks around here.

I just drove by a swarm hanging in a treebranch in North Ridgeville, Ohio 44039. Just south of the Ohio Turnpike, across the pike from Lake Ridge Academy. It just caught my eye on the way into work.

Funny thing... ...I have a nuc, waxed frames and swarm lure in the car that I am going to set out in the stand of trees directly behind the plant later this afternoon. Unfortunately, nowhere near North Ridgeville.

3 lb. swarm in an apple tree only two feet from the ground.

Easy swarm to catch. Placed them in a 5 frame nuc box.

Got a swarm call today (05/20/11) from Painesville, OH. Nice day for a swarm, being around 70 degrees and the first sunny day above 55 degrees for the last week. Unfortunately, the guy that called was looking to purchase a hive body to put the swarm in to keep for himself, not for me to come out and get some free bees. He said the swarm was on a tree branch, about the size of a basketball. Same tree that he caught a swarm in last year.
