First swarm - 5/23, found it about 5:00 pm in a small Oak tree.
Weather: Impending storm, thundering in the distance.
Second swarm - 5/25, found them in the apple tree about 4:00 pm.
Weather: Impending rain clouds on the horizon.
Third swarm - 5/27, found them in a four foot tall cedar tree, about 7:00 pm
    Weather: Clear and warm.
All were caught and hived by us or a friend.
I have every reason to believe they came from our 1 overwintered hive, that we had already split on 4/11.

Swarm date 6/8/14 - one of my bee packages hived this year, the temp was in the 80s...I was able to cut and retrieve the limb and rehive them in a new hive body. They are building out comb and doing well as of today.

April 31, 2015.....caught my first swarm this morning. Southcentral Kansas (near Wichita). I thought this was pretty early in the year for my area. First pic...swarm hanging from hammock with many more on the ground. 2nd pic....dropped about a third of them into a hive box and the rest raced for the entrance. 3rd pic....after about 10 minutes, most were inside set up housekeeping.

Oh crud, I put April 31.....? April only has 30 days and it's only the beginning of April. Sorry, in my excitement I meant to put March 31, 2015.

4/18/15 - found a swarm presumably from 1 of our 3 hives about 25' from existing hives in a cedar tree. A nice large swarm we were able to put in a box fairly easily. Weather was thunderstorm overnight before and into late morning. Skies had cleared by noon and we found this at about 5:30-ish.

5/10, Lawrence KS, I found a medium size swarm down by my hives, only 5 ft or so off the ground, in a cedar tree. It had just got done raining. I've still got them hived so I think I have them at this point. I don't think the swarm was issued from any of my hives.

5/15/15 66401 Captured 2 swarms this morning. One 20' feet up above my hives and another on a tree limb 5' feet up and 20 yards from my hives. The taller ones were from a hive that had 2 recently hatched queen cells. The lower one looks like it was from a nuke I queened a month ago and had just moved into 2 deeps Monday.

Two swarms today, 6/22, one high in my cedar tree, one low in the same tree...likely both from my hives, but I've not been able to determine that yet. I've been concerned about being nectar/honey bound in a few of my hives. We'll know more tomorrow. I got them both for now, but that may or may not take.

    Default Kansas

    What is needed:

    • zip code, city or county
    • date when the bees swarmed or when you found the swarm.
    • comments - example: if the swarm came from your hive, or if you were called to pick up a swarm, how long was it there. This is not for cutouts unless the bees just took up residence and are not established. It would also be great to include a small photo of the swarm.

This forum is not for general discussion.
    Regards, Barry

Swarm moved into my swarm trap on Prairie street. Unknown if they are feral or from someone else's hive. Not from my hives since they are nowhere near.

Swarm trap. Trap is ~30 feet from bee tree but didn't see the swarm develop.

5/12/17 - Lawrence, KS 66044. Found a different swarm in the same bait hive. Hive was strapped to a tree, about 10' above the ground, along a treeline in a residential neighborhood. Hive was in full shade and facing south. Guess I got a lucky spot now.
