July 4th weekend, Dubuque, Iowa. Swarm, I was e-mailed instead of being phoned, by the time I got message they had moved into a limestone wall. I was to far away to set up a trap out. Today, July 15, got a call from Riverside, Iowa, a lady had a mound of bees on her patio. I couldn't leave work for a couple of hours, but told her I would be out. She lives in a condo and her condo association called someone else and they came and got them. At least the lady was nice and called me to let me know. And at least somebody hived them instead of the exterminators coming out.

We are new beekeepers (second year). We caught our first swarm on 07-27-11 in central Iowa in a conifer tree about 30 feet off the ground. So exciting! My son (age 16) had an extra hive that he'd been building so we used that to catch the hive. My son's beekeeping mentor says he thinks it's not a feral swarm as the bees are very much the same color/look. We also think that the swarm might be a result of some severe wind storms that came through the are - such as maybe the original hive was blown over? The new hive from the swarm is doing well.

Got a swarm call this morning in NE Iowa. The swarm was the size of a soccer ball and had been there since Friday afternoon. Only 6 feet off the ground and it was textbook easy to collect it! I think of the approximatley 5 swarms I've gotten, this one was the largest and the easiest to get to.

First call tonight. Earlier in the day a guy had a pretty good size cluster on his house and a small cluster on a low branch by his tree. He didn't know people collected them so he was trying to figure out how to get rid of them and came across my "ads" at some point. Unfortunately, he didn't contact me until 9. The swarm had moved along when I had him check again before my brother and I made the drive (about an hour one way).

Swarm was in Rock Island, IL. It's coming!

    What is needed:

    • zip code, city or county
    • date when the bees swarmed or when you found the swarm.
    • comments - example: if the swarm came from your hive, or if you were called to pick up a swarm, how long was it there. This is not for cutouts unless the bees just took up residence and are not established. It would also be great to include a small photo of the swarm.

This forum is not for general discussion.
    Regards, Barry

Neighbor called and said he saw a swarm at his next door neighbors. I loaded up and was there in five minutes. Swarm was on the trunk of a pine tree and had been there about 1 hour when I collected it.

Received a call about a swarm on a pine tree branch. It was a small swarm on the end of a pine tree branch about 8' in the air. Shook them once into a pail, waited about 5 minutes and shook the remainder into another pail. Swarm had been there about 2 hours.

Found a large swarm on one of the "swarm posts" in my apiary. I'm sure it was from my own hives. It took two deeps to hive them. I saw the queen, so hopefully they will stay put.

Had a person stop and ask if I was a beekeeper because he had a swarm in his tree. It was a large swarm on a branch about 6 feet off the ground. He said the swarm had been there about 1 hour. Caught and hived them.

Two more swarms. Is anyone else reading this post? No reason to post if I'm the only one on here.

I read it and is that an average season of swarm catching in your area? I had one lead was a false alarm "wasps" and a neighbor tell me of a feral ball on the side of her house after had left.
