Default Split top and split bottom frame, what foundation?

    Hello friends-

Just came across about 150 deep frames with split tops and split bottoms; no foundation. What foundation do I buy and how do I install/assemble?

    Thanks in advance!

I would avoid this style of frame. Use grooved.

Came across meaning free? If its free then I would buy a few different types of foundation and see what works best. I believe you will need to wax the foundation in so look into that as well

Kelley Bees makes a slotted or split top frame. Unless they were free, I'd avoid them (I bought some two years ago and didn't like them because of the SHB hiding in the slots), too many places for small hive beetle to hide in. If they were free and you wanted to try them, check Kelley's foundation for the kind to fit their frames, it might fit the ones you're looking at. I'd measure the frames and the slots to see if the foundation fits before ordering or be ready to trim the foundation.

Michael Palmer has a cool little jig he uses when inserting foundation for his comb honey. Hope this helps

The split top frames I've had (and have) all have solid bottom bars. The split bottom bar frames I've had all have wedge top bars. I have never had any that were split both top and bottom. I would probably nail the split bottom together and clean the split top so you can drop the foundation in (as the split top is intended to do) and have it rest on the bottom bar.

I would look at making the bottom work like a grooved unit by gluing/stapling in a filler. A skewer may do it. Maybe you could insert a temporary spacer and shoot a staple through to form a bottom for foundation. If you go with plastic foundation, that should be enough. The staple legs may cut wax foundation allowing it to sag before it is drawn out. You could hot wax the foundation in, but that seems like a lot of work.

If you wanted to do foundationless, you could easily put in tongue depressors, etc. in both top and bottom and between.
