Default ideas as to what's going on here?

Bees are clustering outside the hive. I haven't inspected today and it's cold and and rainy. I've only seen this on hot days or after inspecting. Thanks in advance!

Looks normal to me. My hives do that from time to time... maybe they are just hanging around waiting on nectar or pollen.

Sounds good, but even in the cold and rain?

Perhaps they are helping keep the entrance reduced to stave of the cold.
I have a hive that does that.

I had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday except the bees were hanging from the top cover like a small swarm. I've never seen anything like this before and I thought that a small swarm had landed on the top of a hive that I have 2 medium supers on. They were a couple of feet higher than the bottom entrance. I checked out this wad of bees and there was no queen so I just dumped them into the top. I put them through an excluder just in case I missed a queen but there was only worker bees?????
I have no idea what was goign on. It had been cool and raining for days and it still is. This blob of bees was even showing signs of having been rained on so I can't help other than to sympathise.
"Challenger" as in the Mopar muscle car. Not a personality description .
Keeping bees to raise money for chordoma.

So, with firs sunny day, they all returned to the hive like normal (or at least the cluster disappeared). So bizarre.
