Not much. A medium depth super w/ 9 frames can't weigh more than 7 or 8 pounds I'm thinking. But I have never weighed one. Why?

I can't tell much difference between a frame with foundation and a fresh drawn frame.

Nooooooooo, selling comb. Not drawn comb on frames, I would never do that.
I keep saving the comb and have not gotten around to melting it. This comb I have cleaned out from tree hives and cut out and such. A person I know wants it to make candles.

So, what does it matter what it weighs? I know you are just curious. Why don't you weigh it? How big a peice are you asking about? Or is it a bucket full?

If I remember correctly, from 4 medium frames with honey, I have approximately 5 kg of extracted honey (crush-and-strain) and 200g pure wax. These are foundationkless truncated standard medium frames. So, something like 50g pure wax per medium frame, not much! When I purify wax, there is a bunch of other stuff in the crushed comb, at least 25-50%. It means that total weight of the empty comb (wax + other stuff) would be 70-100 g per medium frame. Sergey

Okay, can't help ya. Sergey has a pretty good idea. Leave it to a scientist to think of measuring such things. I'm glad we have such people.

I remember reading somewhere that a hive body of combs will yield about 2 pounds of wax.

Mark, I am so glad, that you did not ask me to convert grams into ounces... I am not SUCH good scientist... It is amusing how little wax used to keep all this honey in foundationless. Sergey

It is an amazing feat (sp?) of engineering that so little an amount of wax can contain such an amount of honey.

What is also interesting is that someone from as far East as Michael Palmer, who I know gets up early, and Sergey, from way out West abaout as far as one can get and they are both up and on beesource at 7:00AM/4:00AM. Gotta get up for work Sergey?

I am 20 years in US but my biological clock is set "moscow time"... In Russia, I have no problem waking up at 7 am. In US... well, I just finished my experiment and should go home... and sleep until noon... good night (morning) everybody! Sergey

I crushed and strained 8 medium frames of honey, and after cleaning the wax, and filtering it I got about 11 oz. So about 1.5 oz of wax per medium frame (including cappings).

A pound and a half, or 2 pounds for a deep would make sense.

There must be a harder way to do that... let me find it for you.

From Beeswax Production, Harvesting, Processing and Products, Coggshall and Morse pg 41

"A pound (0.4536 kg.) of beeswax, when made into comb, will hold 22 pounds (10 kg.) of honey. In an unsupported comb the stress on the topmost cells is the greatest; a comb one foot (30 cm.) deep supports 1320 times its own weight in honey."

Not a direct response, but I weighed a few empty 10 frame mediums with drawn comb and averaged about 10.5 lbs per box - some had plastic frames and some wood and some mixed. A similar deep weighed about 15lbs. I wanted to establish a rough tare weight for my boxes so that I could weigh a full/partial super and estimate how much honey it contained. Paul

Weigh a frame with the empty comb.
    Weigh a frame with foundation
Weigh a frame without any foundation

This will give you the weight.

The more you do the more accurate it will be.

Some digital kitchen scales go to 0.1 of a gram.

The value of the comb in terms of honey, about 7 times the wight of the comb
