In regards to the iron on finish, the big advantage from wax dipping is that you actually boil out the water in the wood, then seal as the wax soaks in. Ironing on should in theory work as well as paint, but not likely to be as good as dipping.
No idea how long my dipped boxes will last, but I have interior plywood swarm traps that sat out 6 months last year, a couple that sat on the ground during a flood, and they're still perfect. First dipped boxes are only 2 years old now, no problems, but no problems from my 3 year old painted boxes yet either.
Just watch the glue you use. Construction type adhesives (f26, etc) have low temp limits and will let go when dipping. Use something like titebond.
Hindsight is 20/10, not 20/20...
After the fact, I always know what didn't work.
