    Re: 18% ABV Sweet mead

Thanks for the link Dan, good stuff. Uh, what exactly is a vinegar eel? Sounds disgusting.

Ok, I googled it. They are disgusting. Tiny little worms (nematodes) living in and destroying ones...

Re: Johno's Easy Vap - Vaporizer

I believe the general consensus on OAV is to not apply it below 40F as the bees will be too tightly clustered. At worst it will simply be ineffective. On a sunny day with temps at 40 or above, I...
  3. Re: German Black bees in the Southeastern US actually Apis mellifera iberiensis?

Not that I believe this article, but some might beg to differ.

  4. Re: How much honey could one expect from one hive? Spring

I may have done the conversion backwards. 1.47:1, but which is which? Have not had my coffee yet this morning either.
  5. Re: How much honey could one expect from one hive? Spring

$8 per pound USD does not sound bad when sold in 2.2# jars.

Re: Northern Midwest Winter Beekeeping Manifesto

Ian winters his entire commercial operation indoors, but optimal temperature is 40F, 50 is too warm. You may eventually make money on the hive products, especially if you sell at super premium...

Re: Two untreated hives in my bee yard

Sounds like a winning solution. You get to keep both your bees and your friend.

    Re: 18% ABV Sweet mead

Another update. After a little psyching myself up, I tasted the mead from the coffee filter set up. Still has a definite yeasty taste and is very sweet, but no other off flavors that I could discern....

    Re: 18% ABV Sweet mead

I transfered to the secondary today. My BPM is right around 1. SG is now 1.038, which should mean that the ABV is at 13.12% so far. Reran the numbers and it looks like I'll have to go fairly dry to...

Re: Please Help the Kids in Oaxaca

Enjoy your trip Michael. I had ignored this thread for some time until you brought it up again at the beginning of this month. Once I actually read it, I realized what a worthy cause it was. Best of...

Re: Two untreated hives in my bee yard

To heck with all that, treat his hives and don't tell him. You have to protect your bees. In the time between now and next spring, maybe you can bring him around or help him find another place for...

Re: Planning for my first bee's come spring

Welcome to Beesource Littlejoe. I agree with the one race suggestion. You should get your bees in late March or early April for the best experience and to catch the flow. Durham is not much different...

Sticky: Re: bone head split so far, somebody save the day.

I love apple fritters. Bought some from Walmart last week and they were terrible. What is your recipe?
  16. Re: How much honey could one expect from one hive? Spring

    Not so.

300.000 kg would equal 661.387 lb. You cannot derive decimal point precision from an equation when one of the numbers is obviously not a precise number.
  17. Re: How much honey could one expect from one hive? Spring

IFOH, keeping it a little more local, 35-40# per hive is considered pretty good here just a bit north of you. Some hives will do better than others, and some will do nothing at all. Your original...

    Re: Help with Comb Honey

For me it was hit or miss this past season, mostly miss. I use foundationless frames for my comb honey and place them in the center positions of a super in which the bees have already shown an...

    Re: 18% ABV Sweet mead

Fermentation has slowed way down. Approximately 3 BPM. I plan on transfering to the secondary sometime this week. As of last week, SG was 1.050, down from my OG of 1.138. Hoping to hit somewhere...

Re: When Should I Wrap My Hives??

  25. Re: Too late to start feeding sugar syrup in Jersey?

Clark, I am still feeding down here in Richmond. I believe my weather is similar to yours so while it is awfully late to be starting, it is not too late to boost their stores a little. Just make the...
