  1. Re: How much honey could one expect from one hive? Spring

My calculations are probably wrong, but it looks like around 3.70/ lb usd. Bulk is much less, but with your volume that seems pretty substantial. I'm surprised with that much honey per hive you're...
  2. Re: How much honey could one expect from one hive? Spring

Started with 2 hives this year. Bought a nuc. Caught one of my swarms. Lost one of my swarms (that I know of). Final harvest was around 5 gallons off of two hives. Now trying to overwinter 4 hives.

Damm (had to get past the auto-censor)! What price do you get for honey in your area? Seems like that much honey could seriously dilute the price you can get.

Re: What to ask at allergy Dr

I wonder if Primatene Mist is a suitable substitute to an Epi pen. Both are epinephrine I think. Seems it would be easier to breathe in a cheap OTC inhaler as opposed to jabbing yourself with a pen....
  6. Re: Taped seams created moisture buildup- hopefully removed it in time

Maybe a classic case of trying to completely insulate a house without allowing for airflow?

Re: What's up with the all the Bircomb?

Is normal. Just remove it so they can't keep building off of it and create a further mess you'll need to deal with at some point.
Put it in a baggie along with the rest of the comb you might want to...

    Re: Sugar $0.39 / lb at walmart.com

Just bought 40 lbs at .39 a pound. Didn't get free delivery until I spent $35, so just tacked on a couple of other items I was going to buy next time I went shopping anyway.

All is not lost if you go with deep supers. When, not if, you find them too heavy to deal with you can always, always use the spare deep boxes.
  10. Re: Did I screw up/ critique my first batch. I wanted a carbonated sweet mead

Yeah, that probably would have been the route to go. The batch came out really nice, but dry and still. I added one of those sugar tablets in each bottle, but it never carbonated. Do you think it...

Why scrape when you have the pressure washer? I was given a bunch of old frames and the pressure washer just blew through the old wax.

I'm not sure if I'd base what's safe on whether you felt something or not. You probably won't cough breathing in asbestos or radon for a while either.

    Poll: Re: Engineering Project

One of the most brilliant engineers I've ever worked with (actually THE most brilliant) had horrible grammar. I guess his mind had better things to think about.

Re: Why would bees be doing this? See picture

Who knows. My bees beard when it's seemingly cooler on some days and don't when it's warmer on other days. And then it's raining and they're bearding like crazy, and the next it's dry and they're not.

    Poll: Re: Engineering Project

A strangely vague and subjective question. Not too heavy for some, but too heavy for others would be my vague response.

    Re: Todays Honey Prices!

Ha! Same with me. This year is the first year I started selling it - $15 a pint. I remind them that it's actually $10 a pound (actually less with the mason jar included). My friend asked where was...
  18. Re: Goldenrod pollen vs. nectar/ treatment rambling

Thanks Fivej. I've heard some negative things with formic, and the temp requirements look like it's probably better to use in September or October. I'd be reluctant to use it in August. I'm also...
  19. Goldenrod pollen vs. nectar/ treatment rambling

My 4 hives here in Connecticut look like they're pulling in a bunch of yellow pollen (I couldn't count per second the amount of bees bringing in pollen for any of the 4 hives). Some dark yellow, some...

Re: What recourse do I have?

"If you have a fenced in back yard i'd add another enclosure of 6 foot fence and close them in totally."

Unfortunately, the fence would likely be a violation of the HOA.

Re: What recourse do I have?

That would be great for me as I could legally eradicate the bear(s) that's been destroying my hives the past few years.

Re: What recourse do I have?

Not to be a jerk, but I'm guessing it has a lot to do with your hive's location. If they're close to your neighbor and they happen to be allergic (or even not and they still get stung) then I can see...

    Re: Full Sun?

So would you say the entrance position has something to do with it, or not so much? If my hives all got the same sunlight, should I worry about entrance location?

edit: wow, didn't see how old the...
