Re: Bees still crowding bird baths

I would keep doing what you are doing. My bees have been getting in my neighbors hot tub, and I am trying to stop this. If you are tired of dumping hot water in it you can get a electric heater.

    Re: queen excluders

I have a few around. I have found them useful when trying to find a drone only laying queen or when I did not want a queen to leave a hive (box I set up for swarm catching).
  3. Re: Is there a problem in giving bees a bit of fermented honey?

One of my coworkers told me a few of his bees took some wine one day, then they were a bit drunk. It sounded like they only got a few drops of wine and only the bees that drank it got drunk.

    I...

    Re: queen excluders

I prefer metal. I can take a blowtorch to it or throw it on the grill and burn it clean
  5. Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- wisdom and folly from 2019

Another random one this year. I also learned not to eat fresh crispy cream doughnuts on the way to the club meeting with a honey competition and then handle jars of honey. I got dinged for finger...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

That was in July. I pulled the top 4 boxes off the big hive to extract. That hive weighed 375 lbs at one point this summer. Going into winter the stack was down to 5 boxes, I probably should have...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

I agree with that. The entire spring/summer/fall seemed to be running 3-4 weeks late this year, then winter showed up early and hard.

About the only thing that I have different from the lists...
  8. Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- wisdom and folly from 2019

Best was having my overwintered hive do well all summer and getting 11 gallons of honey out of 2 hives (and leaving them 75+ lb each).

Worst was losing those 2 hives due to MAQS failure resulting...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

I think my other 2 hives are in better shape. They both were a lot stronger going into winter and have plenty of stores (2-3 mediums full of honey/sugar). I had MAQS fail badly in the 2 hives that...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

2 of my 4 hives crashed during the cold snap last week. When I opened the 2 hives that were not flying today I found queen cells in one with a dead cluster, and the second one had a small dead...

I was at the CSBA meeting on the second, but I forgot about your post.

Re: Best way to thin syrup

    4. There is no room in the hive for any more syrup and they are "honey bound"

    Re: Pint Jar Cost

This I got a lot of jars free from my brothers wedding, they used them for table decorations. I ran them thru the dishwasher, got new lids and called it good :)

    The other option depending on...

Anyone have a source (other than making them yourselves) for jumbo frames?

  16. Re: Down with Double Deeps! Fess up, you alternative hive-style followers!!!!

I run a deep on bottom and then stack mediums on top of that. I try to have 2-3 filled mediums going into winter. It is much easier to lift a medium than a deep.

I am curious about the double...

    Re: burlap for quilting box?

I put a 1x2 (ish) board down the middle of the box about 1/4" up to support the wire mesh that I installed. With it stapled on both sides of the box and on to the cross bar in the middle it seems to...

    Re: burlap for quilting box?

This would help with insulation, but it probably will not help as much with moisture since there is not much area for moist air to mix with the wood shavings.

    Re: burlap for quilting box?

I think the reason people generally recommend coffee bags are they are a lot less likely to contain chemicals since they are used for food. A lot of the chemicals listed there are used for treating...

    Re: Frame rack

I just load the frames into boxes and stack the boxes to store them. If you do stack them alternating top-bottom-top does allow you to stack them more densely.

edit: if you alternate when they...

    Re: burlap for quilting box?

I used a layer of 1/8 hardware mesh then a layer of burlap. The burlap keeps the wood shavings from falling thru and the hardware mesh keeps the bees from going into the wood shavings

    Re: MAQS failure

I did a sugar roll on all 4 hives today.

In hive 1 (this thread) I found 23 mites in 1/3 cup of bees

in hive 2 I found 22 mites in 1/3 cup of bees

in hive 3 I found 3 mites in 1/3 cup of...
  23. Random thought - Seperating boxes during winter in a small/weak hive with newspaper

I have a hive that is not doing well due to mite issues. The might issues are a combination of my mistakes (oops), weird weather, and MAQS problems. I was thinking about how I could maybe help this...

    Re: MAQS failure

The strips were somewhere around a sticky paste. They did smell a lot like caulk when I opened them, which I assumed was normal. This year was my first time using MAQS, I used apivar strips last...

    Re: MAQS failure

uggg, somewhere I lost a date in the first post. I did one strip on september 22, 2 on October 6, and 2 on october 13.

I agree that I did not follow the instruction correctly by placing 2...
