Re: Purchased Queen Never Laid An Egg

    On the other hand:
We buy box after box of queens, introduce them properly and have very, very few problems.
All queen producers are not the same.
Their genetics aren't the same, their employees...

    Re: Honey Tank Score!

I have never seen a honey bottling tank that seals air tight.
  3. Re: Why do Queen Bee prices not fluctuate based on seasonal demand?

    I appreciate the free market.
If the price is too high sales will suffer.
There are always other vendors that buyers can chose from.
    But what about quality?
And what about your position of...

Re: Commercial - Swarm Prevention Methods

    Oh, I don't know.
Maybe I was just being a little "crazy".
    :p
  5. Re: Business ethics question. Am I in the wrong?

I am so very glad to see discussion of "Beekeeper Ethics" taking place.
I worry that these principles are eroding as time passes.
Beekeeping is an "agricultural community" and CAN funtion...

Re: Commercial - Swarm Prevention Methods

This is similar to my situation.
For those of us that take bees into almonds; we manage for strong hives early in the season.
Without knocking them back prior to the flow, they would all swarm....

Re: Commercial - Swarm Prevention Methods

Is there really such a thing as "swarm prevention"?
We shake packages, pull nucs, make hard divides.
Is that "swarm prevention" or are we just swarming for them, but in a controlled fashion?
  8. Re: My first two hives of 10,000 have been ordered :)

When one has 10,000 hives and no help, reversing 408 at a time speeds things up.

    Re: Losses

I'm not sure what the traditional signs of "CCD" looks like, but DEFINITELY have noticed the cells.
Almost every single deadout has queen cells in one form or another.
    These queen problems would...

    Re: Losses

Pretty sad when 25% is viewed as "low" losses.
Most, if not all of the beekeepers that I know lost more than 25% this winter.

The worst part is, WE ARE GETTING NO HELP!!
    A "new" video showing...

    Cold, Wet, Mud, Late bloom

I have been pollinating almonds in Glenn and Butte county's for over 15 years and this is the latest bloom yet.
My grower in Glenn county told me that there is not a single bloom on the Winters...

Re: Can I Make a Living from Bees???

It can be a challenge sifting the wheat from the chaff when just getting started.
It looks to me like you have made two VERY GOOD choices.

    Re: supersedure from package install

For the newer beekeepers, I wanted to add a few comments.

It is very, very important for beekeepers to be able to identify Supercedure, emergency and swarm cells as early on as possible.
    This is...

    Re: supersedure from package install

Along similar lines of Micheal Palmer's response, we have always thought the problem is an imbalance of pheromones.
All of a sudden you have a hive with nothing but eggs, etc so they draw...

    Re: forklift

In all of beekeeping, the element of scale becomes very apparent.
Whether it is hive assembly, honey packing, hive moving; as an operation increases in size, equipment must have capability to get...

    Re: Reading Recommendations

Prior I read this book, I now know that I knew very, very little about the bees them self.
This is not a "how to keep bees" book.
We already have enough of them.
This is on my "must have" list for...

    Re: Vorra

Beesource had an entire forum devoted to FGMO several years ago.
Those that posted, swore that it was the silver bullet.
That forum and those beekeepers are gone.
    Dead bees don't enlist much...

Re: brood break to make OAV work

    Baybee,
PLEASE insert a new stickyboard and dribble the hive with a 3.4% oxalic solution, 5 ml per seam today or tommorrow.
The results would be most interesting.
  22. Re: I am thinking about switching to all deeps

Medium supers FULLY drawn, filled and capped, wall to wall are already too heavy in my opinion.
The weight isn't the total problem, but rather the load center distance.
If the weight was a barbell...

  25. Re: My first two hives of 10,000 have been ordered :)

I have 5 motorcycles in the garage that have not been started in 5 years.
