    Re: Brushy mountain wood ware

Part making and assembly is the easy part. The part I find tedious is the painting.

    Re: Tool bucket replacement ideas

I prefer the 5 gallon bucket with the bucket organizer sold by Mann Lake https://www.mannlakeltd.com/beekeeper-s-bucket-organizer.
The only bad thing about it is that it raises the center of gravity...
  3. Re: Got viciously attacked today when observering hive

My brother had one. It was very cute when small. It would keep stealing his watch and keys and hide them. As it got older, it got more aggressive and he had to get rid of it.

    Re: HELP! Very Lethargic Package

I am willing to bet if you introduce another queen and cull the current queen, the bees will supercede the new queen within a month. IMHO, assuming the nuc you purchased are Italian bees,...

    Re: Queen in feeder?

I would say it was most likely a drone.

    Re: HELP! Very Lethargic Package

Others will probably contradict me but I have never had luck turning around a laying worker hive. I have tried a few times but could never do it. Adding egg frames from another hive just damages 2...

    Re: HELP! Very Lethargic Package

One suggestion I make to new beeks is to stick with the generic Italian bees and keep them alive for a few seasons before trying any of the exotic breeds. Especially an exotic bee purchased as a...

Re: Is Mann Lake operational right now?

You just need to be patient. Things are not moving as quickly as they did before the pandemic. I had to wait about 5 days before my order was shipped. One item was back-ordered and I received that...
  10. Re: Super Stack Heater for a Handy Hobbyist

I would add a small fan to turn on with the lights. That would keep the temperature even throughout the stack.

    Re: Hive keeps swarming

Those are afterswarms. You should keep only 1 or 2 swarm cells and destroy the rest. It is best to only leave swarm cells on one frame, that way, it is easier for the new emerged virgin queen to...

Re: Who is making this wax?

My guess is that it is not wax but bee poop.
  13. Re: Neighbor is going to add 2nd floor to house :(

Unless there are HOA rules or city/county ordinances about hives, I wouldn't worry about it. Bees respond more to their hive being jostled than loud noises or barking dogs.
As a side note, I found...

Re: 5 year old capped honey

I would eat it myself or feed it back to the bees. I would bet that it is crystalized after that much time, however.
  15. Re: Mass of dead bees, some honey, zero brood -- what happened, what now?

Huge mistake. If the alcohol test was done incorrectly (using too old bees, for example) you will get a false negative. Assume you have mites and treat your hives.
  16. Re: First hive manipulation after the winter

If they are bringing in forage, remove the shims. I kept mine on too long and a few hives built a bunch of drone comb attached to the inner cover.
  17. Re: New Hives, Use Frames With Drawn Comb Or Not?

If the drawn wax was from your hives, I would use them. It really gives a package a productivity boost. If you got the drawn frames through some other source, I would start with new foundation.

    Re: Dirty Sugar

I don't know exactly where it was used but was purchased in TN so it was probably liquor related.

    Re: Dirty Sugar

Okay, you forced me to taste it..... yum...... sugary....
I had already fed some to the bees which is when i found out it was plugging the feeders. No ill effects.

    Re: Dirty Sugar

It looks like ordinary sandy dirt except that it is extremely fine. There are also rocks in the sugar.
I make it in 2 gallon batches. I mix in the water and strain through a t-shirt. Then if the...

    Re: Dirty Sugar

I let it settle overnight and it was still very turbid. I was using a ladle to scoop the syrup and pour it through the coffee filter. I had to change the coffee filter 5 times for just 2 gallons. ...

    Dirty Sugar

I have a problem that I hope someone can suggest something.

    Re: Questions Concerning Candy

I place my sugar bricks in the oven at about 150 degrees. I wait until the oven has heated up before putting the bricks in the oven. If you put them in the oven before it has heated up, it will...
  25. Re: What date should I have my bees arrive?

I tried them one year. Quite a disappointment. The two nucs I bought were so weak, they didn't survive the season.
