  1. Re: is this chilled brood or something worse?

Photos do strange things to the bottom of cells. Seeing black spots.
Uncap some cells and pull out some of the crusty critters.
Chilled killed brood will often stay capped when there is a lot of...
  2. Re: Preponderance capped brood necessarily leading to swarm?

"I did find a frame of eggs, no queen cells being developed, so swarming not imminent."

I just lost a similar bet. She laid a couple of frames of eggs after I added space. I found no cells, got...

    Re: Easy cell builder help

Went in today. All three cells torn down, a little bit of larva from the eggs from the good pattern I saw last time. Not one egg did I see. Guess I did not stop the swarm after all. Waiting for the...
  4. Re: Preponderance capped brood necessarily leading to swarm?

Iím thoroughly confused by all of the conflicting perspectives.

Not really conflicting, just a close call. Baseball analogy; the difference between a ball and a strike is often the ump's view....

    Re: Easy cell builder help

The calendar is my enemy. Looking at this as a higher probability vertical split. the value of the vertical split being less disruption and the downside being less success.

    Frank, thinking about...

    Re: Easy cell builder help

Well I gave it a try with my ugly scrap extenders on a single hive. I did not find frames the I really liked (that hive is a stand alone location so no other hive to pull). Very few young larva...
  7. Re: Does dong a bunch of walk away Nuc splits count as queen rearing?

Appreciate the details. Been debating in my head how many brood frames and how many nurse bees makes sense for the amount of foragers.

Your sequence of moving the foragers back to the nucs makes...

    msl,
    queen away or queen stay?
What did you leave for brood and nurse bees?

    Re: Bees attacking neighborhood

With the problem you have in the neighborhood, or will have, I would strongly recommend the first split be a flyback split. Gets the worsts bees into a small hive. At least find a place to move that...
  10. Re: Does dong a bunch of walk away Nuc splits count as queen rearing?

"guarantees that I have multiple overwintered colonies come spring." There are no guarantees. A walk away for one hive is a high risk low reward. Nothing or poor queens is the most probable.
    With...

    Re: Bees attacking neighborhood

I can picture a game of chicken. Slap the hive and run. Maybe my memory of a certain hive of ground hornets and a few brothers.
  12. Re: Neighbor contesting our beekeeping permit - advice for the upcoming hearing?

You do not have to lose a year. You may have to lose the convenience of your yard.

Back to making your case. Can you film bees currently in your yard ?

    Re: Bees attacking neighborhood

These were reasonable bees last summer and fall. They did not requeen over the winter. Other than a very late fall requeen there is not much of a window to change that much. A hive will drift towards...
  14. Re: Does dong a bunch of walk away Nuc splits count as queen rearing?

    Walk away.
What you do when you walked away from what needs to be done, to do what you want to do.
What you do when you know it will be a while before you can come back.

    Re: Global Warming

Falling test scores are the result of greedy academia? Yet you are suspicious of falsely assigning cause and effect.

I would pin the blame more on bad parenting. Let you child play video games...

    Re: Bee club blues

So, do they share the treasure's report with everyone? Including the State Income Tax Division? Collecting a fee for service and putting it in your pocket is income. Running it through the clubs...

    Re: Global Warming

I blame the phrase "cause and effect".
It is virtually a lie. "Causes and effects", now that is totally different.

Proving there was an effect does not mean there was a single cause. There were...

What is your objection to people believing in GW. What actions do you believe those fools who believe in science are going to have an impact on you? A solar panel is a threat to you? What action...

    Re: Global Warming

Does anybody seriously believe that air pollution is good for us. If you do not have asthma who cares. Let's pollute the water, somebody else's problem.

Arguing that warming is a natural cycle is...

    Re: Splitting Hives

Whats in the white cells in picture 1 ?
Mold is not a problem but what killed the hive. If there was brood when it died I would be very concerned. That is unless I saw them sticking to brood and...

Re: Splits -why not move queen?

If you do not want to look for queen put on excluder and wait for reload of nurse bees.
    Move entire hive.
Place a new hive in old location.
Add brood frame/s with bees to new hive.
    Wonder what's...

  24. Re: Neighbor contesting our beekeeping permit - advice for the upcoming hearing?

Well you are doing your homework. What is the track record of approval or denial in the past? I would look for an approval of a similar application. The past record is your best clue of the approach...

    Re: Package re-queening question

You will know after you know.
LW is a possibility if only because every package has some chance of getting a solid shake of LW from a donor hive. My guess, drone laying queen mostly due to no...
