  1. Re: Harvesting plans, fume board, OAV, too many supers stacked

@Larry, CCD is now thought to be a term given for a variety of issues like mite overload combined with other problems and is generally out of favor among beekeepers. Check your mite level.

    Re: Honey from soybeans?

Why soybeans? Welfare. Because they are heavily subsidized by taxpayers. The subsidy greatly increased to more than the crop was worth by Trump because the biggest buyer, China, stopped buying...

    Re: Herbicide

The products are simply acetic acid, aka vinegar, and salt. Probably some soap too. You can make your own much less money. I use it over commercial herbicides . J

    Re: Refractometers

Agree that it's worth the small change. Bottling up honey and having it ferment is a bummer, even for a hobbyist. Recalibrate frequently. Learned that lesson. J

Re: Is anybody else having a hard season?

I wouldn't say hard, but a little disappointing. Spring too wet and summer too dry. Clover was a bust. It was abundant but didn't produce nectar. Still have goldenrod to go, but would guess 75...

Re: Equalizing hives, when and why?

I start to equalize hives now to ensure winter survivability. My stronger hives donate stores to the weaker hives. If I need to feed, I check again before buttoning them up for winter. J

I believe this is how the law works here too but may vary by state. The law may be one thing but the norm in the practice may be another. J

  10. Re: What to do with the frames after extracting honey?

Good advice above. I would just add that if you have a decent flow on when wets are put back on hives for clean up, they may fill them instead of cleaning them. Make sure any upper entrance is closed...

Kelly, all of the responses were legit advice, and they took you seriously. This just proves that local knowledge about conditions are more valuable. Keep that in mind because you will get advice from...

Re: New right away- what to plant?

Milkweed for starters. Pods will be available soon for seeding. For other late summer and fall flowers, take a walk and see what they are on now and make a note to get those seeds. Aster and...

    Re: Hotboxing with Oxalic Acid

Some people make a shim with a slot and do it from the top. You still have to be careful that the wand doesn't rest on the top bars. Most slide in a thin sheet of metal on the bottom board such as...

    Re: Bee watering station

Some have good success with chicken water stations. The bees were attracted to the chemicals in your hot tub, especially if you use chlorine. Try putting a little in the feeder. It will attract them...
  18. Re: Queens Are Reluctant To Lay In Honey Frames?

Thanks All. So from Kamon's experience, it appears accurate that she does prefer brood comb. Kamon, you run deeps for honey supers. Do you try to keep the brood and honey frames segregated? J
  19. Re: Just saw the first Monarch Butterfly of the Season-can Autumn be far behind?

@elmer, that's eatin size! Biggest I see around here is the luna moth which is really beautiful. I have seen similar moths around here but its out of the black witch moth range, so unsure what it...

  21. Queens Are Reluctant To Lay In Honey Frames?

I recently read somewhere, maybe here, that queens avoid laying in comb that has previously held honey. I have never heard this before, nor have I experienced it, but I use deeps for brood and...

    Re: Formic pro this week

If you have the weather and young queens, I would do 2 strips in hives of your size. But this is just what I do. If you have a queen loss, you have time to get another. Do not treat for 24hrs after...
