Well there were no mites, no sign of deformed wings. Zero pollen in the frames and lots of dead bees. Pictures http://imgur.com/a/WGSoW8V

Re: How long do you keep a swarm sealed up?

To keep them from leaving? I've never sealed one up and never had one leave. They've always been happy to have old comb to start with.
  3. Re: Not entirely sure what else I can do to prevent winter losses.

Quarter teaspoon huh? Well I guess it’ll last me awhile! Hah! The lawn mower battery is probably a good idea. I pull up pretty close to the hives so the weight isn’t a huge issue but no need for...
  4. Re: Not entirely sure what else I can do to prevent winter losses.

Ahhh the mask! Knew I forgot something. I have more pairs of goggles than I know what to do with haha. Mask ordered!

I have plenty of oil. I make soap too so it never gets old but it's cheap...
  5. Re: Not entirely sure what else I can do to prevent winter losses.

Nancy I already bought the wand on Ebay from Oxavap's account. Ebay is running an 8% Ebay Bucks promotion right now so I now I have $13 back I can spend on other things :) Also bought 5lbs of...

One of those instances where less is more huh? Thanks for the heads up I'm learning a lot today.

Just ordered my vaporizer. I'm ready!

Why's that? It's supposed to be similar to this - https://www.mannlakeltd.com/pro-health-pint
  8. Re: Not entirely sure what else I can do to prevent winter losses.

Wow Nancy that was an absolutely amazing post. I have never done an OAV Treatment but have heard very good things and, as said, I will try anything to make this work! I'll be buying the equipment...
  9. Re: Not entirely sure what else I can do to prevent winter losses.

I did Apivar at the very start of the season and MAQS at the end of summer in August.

Yes I fed in the spring & fall. 1-1 in the spring and 2-1 in the fall. I did not feed immediately after...
  10. Re: Not entirely sure what else I can do to prevent winter losses.

Thank you both so much. I've never done an alcohol wash on dead bees before but that's a great idea. I will check that this weekend.

I never even considered EFB. Hope that's not it. I did put...
  11. Re: Not entirely sure what else I can do to prevent winter losses.

Actually there is *one* thing I did differently year 1 than I did in 2/3 I used fondant instead of granulated sugar on newspaper as emergency feed. A lot of people near me swear by it and say it...
  12. Not entirely sure what else I can do to prevent winter losses.

This past winter I lost all of my colonies. I treat twice a year (spring and late summer) I feed them going into the winter, I ensure they have ventilation, I have my mouse guards on, I make sure...

Re: What do bees do with dry sugar ?

I love adding dry sugar to hives as part of the winterization process. Serves the dual purpose of moisture control and emergency feed. By the time they would need it it will have absorbed enough...

Re: Too many bees going into Winter

Lay some fondant on top of the frames if you're worried about starvation.
  15. Re: When Music and Beekeeping Collide, Flight of the Bumblebee

Wow that's too cool. I wonder how many stings were gotten in the making of that video haha.

Welcome! Bees can be a lot of work but it's very rewarding. Good luck!
  17. Re: national guard is spraying Dibrom over Houston area tonight -- what do I do for b

First off I'm so sorry to hear about the hives you've already lost, my heart goes out to you. You could try throwing a tarp over them as that should help keep any spray drift out without actually...
  18. Re: New bee keeper just outside of Calgary AB

Welcome! Like Scott said it's better to install sooner rather than later. Did you buy a package or nuc?

    Re: Hello from Ohio!

Welcome aboard! You'll be amazed with the difference between the nuc and packages by the end of the year.

Re: How mean do they have to get

If I can't take my suit off 100 yards away after finishing up it's time. I don't really care how aggressive they are when I'm actually working them.

    Re: To late to split?

I know plenty of guys around here that do splits in August after the flow and overwinter them as 5 over 5 Nucs and I'm planning on doing the same this year. You've got more than enough time. Of...
  23. Re: After a week, the bees grew comb where I didn't want it and I removed it.

Removing the comb was the right thing to do and you learned that bees will always fill up empty space if you leave it for them. :)

Welcome! Two hives is a great number to start with. Did you end up with nucs or packages?

    Re: First ever cutout

Great work! I have ZERO carpentry skills so I wouldn't be comfortable opening the wall of someone's home. Maybe one day. Probably not haha.

7 days should be plenty, I'd think.
