    Re: Still too many mites

Randy Oliver is conducting ongoing experiments with OAV extended release" shop towels". Pray tell why you take his research with a grain of salt because of that. Most would say he is doing us a great...

    Re: Still too many mites

As I said, timing of treatments depends on location. But the bee and mite cycles still matter where you are. If you see no reason why, read some Randy: scientiificbeekeeping.com

    Re: Still too many mites

Not pointing to anyone in particular, but I do think that it is critical to know the mite cycle and the bee cycle and to treat at the right time. This will differ by location of course. It is tricky...

Re: Bees still crowding bird baths

If you aren't adding pollen sub or feeding sugar in small amounts which can stimulate brooding, then they will determine when to shut off brooding so I wouldn't worry about it. But it does appear...
  7. Re: How much honey could one expect from one hive? Spring

Love the responses, especially MB's continuing education courses. I'm too small to give an educated response, but experienced enough to say Good Luck. J

    Re: queen excluders

They fill the metal ones too. Put them in the freezer and then clean with hive tool or putty knife. I find that the plastic ones are easier to clean because you can bend them and the wax and propolis...

Re: best way to 2:1 feed in-hive?

Another vote for the paint cans. Cheap, effective and no beetle issues. Also good for storing left over syrup. I just put a piece of painters or duct tape over the holes and it stays fresh until...

Wow, that's remarkable. How long did it take them? I assume the set up is the same as the others? J

Re: Bee with torso up stinger out like a scorpion?

A couple people have said that the bees reaction is because its cold. The OP said it was 60f. I think that most people in the northern climes would consider 60f perfectly warm enough for bees. I...

Re: Looking for reading material suggestions

Can't think of a book right now that would suit your tastes, but if you want something to read that will occupy a lot of your time, you should download the numerous threads on making sugar bricks. J

She was reacting to your headlamp. You are asking for trouble opening a hive at night with a light unless its a red light. J

    Darn Wax Moths Still Active!

I put out 5 frames of deep brood combs to spray with BT and before I got back to do it, there were lots of bees cleaning up some nectar in the comb. So I left it for them and brought them in at dark...

    Re: Frame rack

For you guys who store foundation on a rack or open box: Don't you have a problem with mice? I store mine in the hive boxes, sealed with ply on each end, or in totes. I do this for convenience but...

Re: bees dying off every morning

Are the wings deformed on the dead, or live bees? If I knew the hive did not have a high mite load, I would not be concerned with 10 dead bees. Its probably just the summer bees dying off at the end...

My friend and co-worker and I were cutting foamboard on a table saw one day, and as he was feeding and I was taking off, I felt something hit my face. It was the tip of his finger and blood. He...

    Foamboard cutting tip

I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but I had to cut 2" foamboard for wrapping my hives and instead of using a utility knife with a long blade and snapping, I reached for my Japanese Pull...

    Re: Bee Escape Not Working

Asking the obvious, but did you place the triangle board with triangle down? No answer as to why they won't move unless your board was not orientated correctly. But I will say that it usually takes 2...
