Re: Essential oils - food grade only?

<There are enough risks when using formic acid and anything that reduces queen loss is worth using.> MY guess is that if this effect is well founded the HBH would have become a standard component of...

Re: Essential oils - food grade only?

I can't remember reading much consensus on the benefits of essential oils. I mean from serious, controlled experiments, not anecdotal claims. Many of them do have miticide capabilities but their bee...

    Re: Laying worker?

Those bees are old so no value there. Make sure you keep the comb from being destroyed by beetles or wax moth. That is where the value is. Personally I would shake them out miles from home!

    Re: Laying worker?

As Bdfarmer suggests uncap some brood. You can identify drones by their much larger eyes vs workers. Comparison photo in the link below.

I agree that such solid capped drone brood will be from...

    Re: Cow urine and EFB

Not much warning; when they are ready to go, they are quick on the draw! I've been had!

If the urine is not cow specific, I can think of easier sources!
  11. Re: What to do with damaged or ruined foundation?

Pressure washer does a good job. They can be rented if you dont have accesss to one.

You should do a rewaxing to get the comb redrawn. Kamon Reynolds has a good video of rewaxing making good...

    Re: Cow urine and EFB

Not so many years ago pregnant mare urine used to be commercially collected for hormone production; estrogen perhaps? It is now synthesized. There might well be something valid in the connection with...

That is the Catenary Arc! seen everywhere in nature for a good reason.

Re: Oxalic/glycerin on cellulose mite treatment

I did not do a lot of digging to find the best price for the cardboard but for a trial that is not a concern. I double glove with the thin nitrile gloves. I usually use them single layer for most all...

Re: Oxalic/glycerin on cellulose mite treatment

<Meaningfully contamination is another story...> Yes. Oxalic acid is a natural component of honey and glycerine is GCAS: generally considered as safe. One of the common components of lip salves etc....

Re: Oxalic/glycerin on cellulose mite treatment

I believe the Aluen Cap strip has approval (or at least no condemnation) in Argentina where it is patented, for use with supers on. Presently they would not be an approved treatment in US. Since bees...

Re: Oxalic/glycerin on cellulose mite treatment

I have seen it suggested to heat just the glycerine to slightly over 200F. ~ 100C. then dump in the OA. That way the OA spends less time at the elevated temperature that causes the formic acid...

    Re: Easy cell builder help

That description is based on the hive dimensions in Britain. Lang boxes would need two 4 frame nuc boxes to go on top of a standard 10 frame bottom box; Like this.

I already have some of them...
