  1. Re: Preponderance capped brood necessarily leading to swarm?

I think would open the lid and look. If you see there are not enough Nurse bees then you could remove the Snelgrove Board, but I wouldn't if it is not necessary.

Re: Please help with some bee math

I'm not that patient. On the day it swarmed I would go in there to see if there are QCs, if they are capped and how many. If there are capped QCs I would then leave them alone for about 2 weeks +/-...
  3. Re: Preponderance capped brood necessarily leading to swarm?

I wait two days to place the Snelgrove Boards after the QEs are placed.

  4. Re: Preponderance capped brood necessarily leading to swarm?

That could have been me the first few times I read posts about Snelgrove boards.

Karen, one of my favorite aspects of the Snelgrove boards is that it affords an easy way to re-queen. If you want...
  5. Re: 2, 3, 5, or 35 What are the least practical to get out of buying bees every year?

    And what have you.

Seriously, though, I think a newbee should start with 3 if they can. Build them up into dbl deeps before Winter. Spend the Winter reading about bees while sitting near your...

    Re: Bee club blues

You must be as old as I am.
I got my first hive from the mail order Sears Store. My first bees were a swarm given to me by a neighbor.

Re: I dont think my new queen was accepted

If your Queen is just starting to lay or there are not enough bees to care for large amounts of brood you will find small patches of capped brood which is normal and sounds like what you have found....

Re: Using a shaker box to find elusive queen(s)

I have found that attaching white plastic QEs to the shaker box makes it easier to see the Queen. I used self tapping screws because I thought a nail might crack the plastic.

Cfalls, I know this is a small sample, but I used Harry's method and I had 4 out of 4 @ten days.

Edit; Oh yeah, it was my first time installing purchased Queens.

    Re: Hive materials OSB?

I believe Advantech also manufactures a sheathing called Zip System that is 3/8 or 1/2 inch thick. It looks like the same thing.
I use Advantech for bottom boards and telescoping covers. It adds...

    Re: Cuisinart harvesting?

I have made Hollandaise Sauce in a blender. The friction from the blades heats the eggs just enough. What it would do to the wax, I don't know.

Check out, "Swarming, its Control and Prevention," by L.E. Snelgrove. It is available as a PDF, on line.

Re: New Nuc swarming our of hive

Are both Queens in their cages? I ask because on your previous post you stated, "The" queen is in the...

Re: New Nuc swarming our of hive

Do you have a Queen in both boxes?
I am wondering if the "clump" that fell to the ground had a Queen within that was released prematurely from her cage.

    Re: crush and strain methods

I wonder if you could cut the comb out of the frame, lay it on a cutting board, cover with plastic wrap and take a rolling pin to it.

Odfrank, I have used two frames of that foundation in 12- five frame splits for expansion. I'll be sure to keep an eye out to see if it continues. Thanks for the suggestion.
