  8. Re: 4/4/4 overwintering nucs...?best way to overwinter bees

    Yeah good thinking Mike.
I will probably give them queens that i graft this spring so will be daughters of my survivors. I have italian/carnis/ Foleys russians/MP queens/anarchy apiaries queens,...

Looking at the next 10-14 days on weather.com seems like pretty typical late march kind of deal.
-> highs in mid to upper 40s a few days in the low 50s, night temps...

Re: Nuc calculator for projected hive count

If I were trying to get to 25 from 5 colonies I would make one strong cell builder and graft 40-45 cells hoping to get 75% mated. I would put the 10 day old queen cells into the 25 x 4 frame (...
  14. Re: finding efficiency with nuc sales; specifically transportation/boxes?

  19. Re: 4/4/4 overwintering nucs...?best way to overwinter bees

All food for thought. I think Mike is right. The ages of the queens is the main difference.
Few benefits being smaller footprint for the same number of colonies and the ease of moving into 10 F...
  20. 4/4/4 overwintering nucs...?best way to overwinter bees

Im noticing over the last 2-3 years of bringing 4/4/4 Michael Palmer style nucs through winter that they seem to winter almost easier than the larger colonies that are in 2 x 10F deeps +/- medium...

i set my maxant wax melter to 95F and it will take about 6-8 hrs ( i usually set it in the morning and when i get home from work its done).
