    Re: Hello to everyone

    Welcome Ismail!
  2. Re: ID of the creepy powder on my hive's inner cover?

Ya, some mold has set up, it’s a winter thing. Put a couple pennies on the front corners under the inner cover till the weather warms up and the bees can resume their housekeeping duties.

    Re: Starvation?

Yup, you got it. That’s the way my ole mentor bud does it right away in the beginning of winter and has done it that way for years. Normal “mountain camp” feeding is a feeder ring, newspaper and...

    Re: Starvation?

It’s possible they’ve chimneyed, where they run thru a couple frames of stores and ended up at the top, or they started brooding up early and ran thru the stores. Either way, it’s not a good sign for...

    Re: Translation & Authenticity ?

Far be it for me to give advice being a knuckle dragger on the subject. But my first thought would a glossary solve the dilemma?

Re: Bee grooming at the hive entrance

I’ve seen that activity before and always took it as the guard bees doing their thing. As in “you don’t have the right smell, you sure you belong here?”
  9. Re: An Inside Look at How the Varroa Mite’s Diet Was Discovered (or How To ID a Monst

Re: Alternative design of a ventilated bottom

Quite a few years ago, there was a few guys on here making the basically the same thing w/ PVC pipe, I haven’t seen any such designs since.

Re: Does anybody reverse/flip bottom boards?

They have enough air flow for the heat and curing honey Ollie? The only reason I ask is I run 1x2 furring strips w/ 3/8” cut out when nesc but run the full 3/4” when the flows on.

Re: Resources on Nectar Flow Timing?

Here’s a start. Over the years I’ve tried to pick up books that have native trees here in Michigan and talking to locals about when things bloom helps a lot too....
  19. Re: What are the bees gleaning from chicken feed?

They’re after the corn powder, they’ll do the same thing for many things including sawdust.

Re: Getting back in, in Northern California.

Welcome! Ya as. My ole mentor bk’n bud is fond of saying “the days of throwing bees in a box in April and coming back and harvesting honey in August are long over”.

    Re: Winter Combining for Resources?

I concur w/ GregV, if the bees are on the sugar it would be a major disruption to get it off and put the new box on. I just added a box to a hive but they had just moved up to the top bars and no...
